All praise be to Allah. None of those types of actions have been reported from the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) or the Companions. If anyone teaches this practice as being part of the Sunnah or the way the Quran is supposed to be read, it is definitely an innovation or bidah. If someone does something to help himself hear or concentrate, it may not be forbidden, but such should not be done in imitation of others who do that just for the sake of imitation. With respect to the listeners, one may admire a person’s recitation of the Quran but the ultimately goal is to reflect upon its meaning. There are verses threatening severe punishments in the Hell-fire and the responses of the listeners is none other than, “Ma shaa Allah, what a beautiful reading.” As such, they are definitely missing the point and goal of reading the Quran.
