competing to memorize Qur'an
as Salaam alaykom. Me and my brother(in Islam) are some-what competing to memorize Qur'an. and we kind of make it fun...like i'll tell him to watch out "I'm 14 ayah deep insha'Allah" meaning i've memorized 14 ayahs of a surah...but of course we both wish that we both memorize the whole thing and we would help each other out, it's not like we hope one memorizes and one doesn't...but insha'Allah, this is like motivation for us. and i was thinking of rewards for the one who memorizes a surah before the other, for instance...the next surah we want to memorize is suratul Mulk...and I was thinking that if he memorizes it first...i'd buy him something and vice versa...is this kind of competing and I guess somewhat challenging halal in this case?

All praise be to Allah, and may His blessings and peace be on the final messenger, Muhammad,

That is very beautiful; may Allah make you both of the preservers of His book in their memories, hearts and actions. As for the prizes, it sounds from your description, like a spontaneous gift, that it is not a form of haram betting, which is an agreed on prize for the winner from the loser of the contest.

As long as it is spontaneous and not agreed on, it is totally fine, and it is also a beautiful expression of brotherhood. Thank you for the cheering question! Allah knows best.
