### الآية 36:1

> يس [36:1]

In the Name of God, the Lord of Grace, the Ever-Merciful. Yā Sīn.

### الآية 36:2

> وَالْقُرْآنِ الْحَكِيمِ [36:2]

By the Qur’an, full of wisdom,

### الآية 36:3

> إِنَّكَ لَمِنَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ [36:3]

you are indeed one of God’s messengers,

### الآية 36:4

> عَلَىٰ صِرَاطٍ مُسْتَقِيمٍ [36:4]

pursuing a straight way.

### الآية 36:5

> تَنْزِيلَ الْعَزِيزِ الرَّحِيمِ [36:5]

It is a revelation by the Almighty, the Ever-Merciful,

### الآية 36:6

> لِتُنْذِرَ قَوْمًا مَا أُنْذِرَ آبَاؤُهُمْ فَهُمْ غَافِلُونَ [36:6]

so that you may warn people whose forefathers had not been warned, and who therefore are unaware \[of the truth\].

### الآية 36:7

> لَقَدْ حَقَّ الْقَوْلُ عَلَىٰ أَكْثَرِهِمْ فَهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ [36:7]

The verdict has been passed against most of them, for they will not believe.

### الآية 36:8

> إِنَّا جَعَلْنَا فِي أَعْنَاقِهِمْ أَغْلَالًا فَهِيَ إِلَى الْأَذْقَانِ فَهُمْ مُقْمَحُونَ [36:8]

Around their necks We have put chains, reaching up to their chins, so that their heads are forced up.

### الآية 36:9

> وَجَعَلْنَا مِنْ بَيْنِ أَيْدِيهِمْ سَدًّا وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِمْ سَدًّا فَأَغْشَيْنَاهُمْ فَهُمْ لَا يُبْصِرُونَ [36:9]

And We have set a barrier before them and a barrier behind them, and We enshrouded them in veils so that they cannot see.

### الآية 36:10

> وَسَوَاءٌ عَلَيْهِمْ أَأَنْذَرْتَهُمْ أَمْ لَمْ تُنْذِرْهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ [36:10]

It is all the same to them whether you warn them or you do not warn them: they will not believe.

### الآية 36:11

> إِنَّمَا تُنْذِرُ مَنِ اتَّبَعَ الذِّكْرَ وَخَشِيَ الرَّحْمَٰنَ بِالْغَيْبِ ۖ فَبَشِّرْهُ بِمَغْفِرَةٍ وَأَجْرٍ كَرِيمٍ [36:11]

You can truly warn only such a one as follows this reminder and who stands in awe of the Lord of Grace although He is beyond the reach of human perception. To such, then, give the happy news of God’s forthcoming forgiveness and a generous reward.

### الآية 36:12

> إِنَّا نَحْنُ نُحْيِي الْمَوْتَىٰ وَنَكْتُبُ مَا قَدَّمُوا وَآثَارَهُمْ ۚ وَكُلَّ شَيْءٍ أَحْصَيْنَاهُ فِي إِمَامٍ مُبِينٍ [36:12]

It is We who will bring the dead back to life. We record whatever \[deeds\] they send ahead, as well as the traces they leave behind. We keep an account of all things in a clear record.

### الآية 36:13

> وَاضْرِبْ لَهُمْ مَثَلًا أَصْحَابَ الْقَرْيَةِ إِذْ جَاءَهَا الْمُرْسَلُونَ [36:13]

Cite for them, as a case in point, the people of a township to which messengers came.

### الآية 36:14

> إِذْ أَرْسَلْنَا إِلَيْهِمُ اثْنَيْنِ فَكَذَّبُوهُمَا فَعَزَّزْنَا بِثَالِثٍ فَقَالُوا إِنَّا إِلَيْكُمْ مُرْسَلُونَ [36:14]

We sent them two messengers, but they rejected them; so We reinforced them with a third, and they said: ‘We are messengers who have been sent to you’.

### الآية 36:15

> قَالُوا مَا أَنْتُمْ إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِثْلُنَا وَمَا أَنْزَلَ الرَّحْمَٰنُ مِنْ شَيْءٍ إِنْ أَنْتُمْ إِلَّا تَكْذِبُونَ [36:15]

They replied: ‘You are nothing but humans like ourselves. Moreover, the Lord of Grace has never revealed anything; you do nothing but lie’.

### الآية 36:16

> قَالُوا رَبُّنَا يَعْلَمُ إِنَّا إِلَيْكُمْ لَمُرْسَلُونَ [36:16]

They said: ‘Our Lord knows that we have indeed been sent to you.

### الآية 36:17

> وَمَا عَلَيْنَا إِلَّا الْبَلَاغُ الْمُبِينُ [36:17]

Our only duty is to clearly deliver the message \[entrusted to us\]’.

### الآية 36:18

> قَالُوا إِنَّا تَطَيَّرْنَا بِكُمْ ۖ لَئِنْ لَمْ تَنْتَهُوا لَنَرْجُمَنَّكُمْ وَلَيَمَسَّنَّكُمْ مِنَّا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ [36:18]

Said \[the others\]: ‘We augur evil from you. Unless you desist, we will surely stone you and inflict on you a painful suffering’.

### الآية 36:19

> قَالُوا طَائِرُكُمْ مَعَكُمْ ۚ أَئِنْ ذُكِّرْتُمْ ۚ بَلْ أَنْتُمْ قَوْمٌ مُسْرِفُونَ [36:19]

\[The messengers\] replied: ‘The evil you forebode is within yourselves. \[Why do you take this as an evil omen\] when you are only being reminded of the truth? Truly, you are going too far’.

### الآية 36:20

> وَجَاءَ مِنْ أَقْصَى الْمَدِينَةِ رَجُلٌ يَسْعَىٰ قَالَ يَا قَوْمِ اتَّبِعُوا الْمُرْسَلِينَ [36:20]

Then a man came from the farthest end of the city at speed. He said: ‘My people! Follow these messengers.

### الآية 36:21

> اتَّبِعُوا مَنْ لَا يَسْأَلُكُمْ أَجْرًا وَهُمْ مُهْتَدُونَ [36:21]

Follow those who ask you for no reward, and are themselves rightly guided.

### الآية 36:22

> وَمَا لِيَ لَا أَعْبُدُ الَّذِي فَطَرَنِي وَإِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ [36:22]

Why should I not worship the One who has brought me into being? It is to Him that you will all return.

### الآية 36:23

> أَأَتَّخِذُ مِنْ دُونِهِ آلِهَةً إِنْ يُرِدْنِ الرَّحْمَٰنُ بِضُرٍّ لَا تُغْنِ عَنِّي شَفَاعَتُهُمْ شَيْئًا وَلَا يُنْقِذُونِ [36:23]

Should I worship other deities beside Him? If the Lord of Grace should will that harm befall me, their intercession will avail me nothing, nor will they save me.

### الآية 36:24

> إِنِّي إِذًا لَفِي ضَلَالٍ مُبِينٍ [36:24]

Indeed, I should clearly be in error.

### الآية 36:25

> إِنِّي آمَنْتُ بِرَبِّكُمْ فَاسْمَعُونِ [36:25]

I do believe in the Lord of you all; so listen to me’.

### الآية 36:26

> قِيلَ ادْخُلِ الْجَنَّةَ ۖ قَالَ يَا لَيْتَ قَوْمِي يَعْلَمُونَ [36:26]

He was told: ‘Enter paradise’. He said: ‘Would that my people knew

### الآية 36:27

> بِمَا غَفَرَ لِي رَبِّي وَجَعَلَنِي مِنَ الْمُكْرَمِينَ [36:27]

how my Lord has forgiven me my sins, and has placed me among the highly honoured!’

### الآية 36:28

> ۞ وَمَا أَنْزَلْنَا عَلَىٰ قَوْمِهِ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ مِنْ جُنْدٍ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ وَمَا كُنَّا مُنْزِلِينَ [36:28]

After that, We did not send an army from heaven against his people; nor do We send any.

### الآية 36:29

> إِنْ كَانَتْ إِلَّا صَيْحَةً وَاحِدَةً فَإِذَا هُمْ خَامِدُونَ [36:29]

Nothing was needed but one single blast, and they fell down lifeless.

### الآية 36:30

> يَا حَسْرَةً عَلَى الْعِبَادِ ۚ مَا يَأْتِيهِمْ مِنْ رَسُولٍ إِلَّا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ [36:30]

Alas for mankind! Whenever a messenger comes to them, they level ridicule on him.

### الآية 36:31

> أَلَمْ يَرَوْا كَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا قَبْلَهُمْ مِنَ الْقُرُونِ أَنَّهُمْ إِلَيْهِمْ لَا يَرْجِعُونَ [36:31]

Are they not aware of how many a generation We have destroyed before them, and that they \[who have perished\] will never return to them?

### الآية 36:32

> وَإِنْ كُلٌّ لَمَّا جَمِيعٌ لَدَيْنَا مُحْضَرُونَ [36:32]

Yet, they all will be brought before Us.

### الآية 36:33

> وَآيَةٌ لَهُمُ الْأَرْضُ الْمَيْتَةُ أَحْيَيْنَاهَا وَأَخْرَجْنَا مِنْهَا حَبًّا فَمِنْهُ يَأْكُلُونَ [36:33]

There is a sign for them in the lifeless earth: We give it life and produce out of it grain for them to eat.

### الآية 36:34

> وَجَعَلْنَا فِيهَا جَنَّاتٍ مِنْ نَخِيلٍ وَأَعْنَابٍ وَفَجَّرْنَا فِيهَا مِنَ الْعُيُونِ [36:34]

We place in it gardens of date palms and grapes, and cause springs to gush out of it,

### الآية 36:35

> لِيَأْكُلُوا مِنْ ثَمَرِهِ وَمَا عَمِلَتْهُ أَيْدِيهِمْ ۖ أَفَلَا يَشْكُرُونَ [36:35]

so that they may eat of its fruit. It was not their own hands that made all this. Will they, then, not give thanks?

### الآية 36:36

> سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ الْأَزْوَاجَ كُلَّهَا مِمَّا تُنْبِتُ الْأَرْضُ وَمِنْ أَنْفُسِهِمْ وَمِمَّا لَا يَعْلَمُونَ [36:36]

Limitless in His glory is He who created all things in pairs: whatever the earth produces, their own human kind and other creatures of which they have no knowledge.

### الآية 36:37

> وَآيَةٌ لَهُمُ اللَّيْلُ نَسْلَخُ مِنْهُ النَّهَارَ فَإِذَا هُمْ مُظْلِمُونَ [36:37]

Another sign for them is the night: We strip the daylight from it, and they are plunged in darkness.

### الآية 36:38

> وَالشَّمْسُ تَجْرِي لِمُسْتَقَرٍّ لَهَا ۚ ذَٰلِكَ تَقْدِيرُ الْعَزِيزِ الْعَلِيمِ [36:38]

The sun also runs its set course: that is laid down by the will of the Almighty, the All-Knowing.

### الآية 36:39

> وَالْقَمَرَ قَدَّرْنَاهُ مَنَازِلَ حَتَّىٰ عَادَ كَالْعُرْجُونِ الْقَدِيمِ [36:39]

And for the moon We have determined phases until it finally becomes like an old date stalk.

### الآية 36:40

> لَا الشَّمْسُ يَنْبَغِي لَهَا أَنْ تُدْرِكَ الْقَمَرَ وَلَا اللَّيْلُ سَابِقُ النَّهَارِ ۚ وَكُلٌّ فِي فَلَكٍ يَسْبَحُونَ [36:40]

Neither the sun can overtake the moon, nor can the night outrun the day. Each floats in its own orbit.

### الآية 36:41

> وَآيَةٌ لَهُمْ أَنَّا حَمَلْنَا ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ فِي الْفُلْكِ الْمَشْحُونِ [36:41]

And yet another sign for them is that We carry their offspring in laden ships,

### الآية 36:42

> وَخَلَقْنَا لَهُمْ مِنْ مِثْلِهِ مَا يَرْكَبُونَ [36:42]

and that We create things of similar kind for them to ride in.

### الآية 36:43

> وَإِنْ نَشَأْ نُغْرِقْهُمْ فَلَا صَرِيخَ لَهُمْ وَلَا هُمْ يُنْقَذُونَ [36:43]

If such be Our will, We may cause them to drown, with none to respond to their cries for help, and then they cannot be saved,

### الآية 36:44

> إِلَّا رَحْمَةً مِنَّا وَمَتَاعًا إِلَىٰ حِينٍ [36:44]

unless it be by an act of mercy from Us, leaving them to enjoy life for a while.

### الآية 36:45

> وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمُ اتَّقُوا مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيكُمْ وَمَا خَلْفَكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ [36:45]

When they are told: ‘Beware of that which lies before you and behind you, so that you may be graced with His mercy’, \[they pay no heed\].

### الآية 36:46

> وَمَا تَأْتِيهِمْ مِنْ آيَةٍ مِنْ آيَاتِ رَبِّهِمْ إِلَّا كَانُوا عَنْهَا مُعْرِضِينَ [36:46]

Every single sign that comes to them from their Lord do they ignore.

### الآية 36:47

> وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ أَنْفِقُوا مِمَّا رَزَقَكُمُ اللَّهُ قَالَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لِلَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَنُطْعِمُ مَنْ لَوْ يَشَاءُ اللَّهُ أَطْعَمَهُ إِنْ أَنْتُمْ إِلَّا فِي ضَلَالٍ مُبِينٍ [36:47]

And when they are told: ‘Give \[in charity\] out of what God has provided for you’, the unbelievers say to those who believe: ‘Are we to feed those whom God could have fed, had He so willed? Clearly, you are lost in error’.

### الآية 36:48

> وَيَقُولُونَ مَتَىٰ هَٰذَا الْوَعْدُ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ [36:48]

They also ask: ‘When will this promise be fulfilled, if what you say be true?’

### الآية 36:49

> مَا يَنْظُرُونَ إِلَّا صَيْحَةً وَاحِدَةً تَأْخُذُهُمْ وَهُمْ يَخِصِّمُونَ [36:49]

All they are waiting for is a single blast that will overtake them while they are still disputing.

### الآية 36:50

> فَلَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ تَوْصِيَةً وَلَا إِلَىٰ أَهْلِهِمْ يَرْجِعُونَ [36:50]

No time will they have to make bequests, nor will they return to their own people.

### الآية 36:51

> وَنُفِخَ فِي الصُّورِ فَإِذَا هُمْ مِنَ الْأَجْدَاثِ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِمْ يَنْسِلُونَ [36:51]

The Trumpet will be sounded, and out of their graves they will rise and hasten to their Lord.

### الآية 36:52

> قَالُوا يَا وَيْلَنَا مَنْ بَعَثَنَا مِنْ مَرْقَدِنَا ۜ ۗ هَٰذَا مَا وَعَدَ الرَّحْمَٰنُ وَصَدَقَ الْمُرْسَلُونَ [36:52]

They will say: ‘Woe betide us! Who has roused us from our resting place? This is what the Lord of Grace had promised. The messengers told the truth’.

### الآية 36:53

> إِنْ كَانَتْ إِلَّا صَيْحَةً وَاحِدَةً فَإِذَا هُمْ جَمِيعٌ لَدَيْنَا مُحْضَرُونَ [36:53]

It takes nothing but one single blast, and they will all have been brought before Us.

### الآية 36:54

> فَالْيَوْمَ لَا تُظْلَمُ نَفْسٌ شَيْئًا وَلَا تُجْزَوْنَ إِلَّا مَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ [36:54]

Today, no one shall be wronged in the least: you will be requited for nothing other than that which you did in life.

### الآية 36:55

> إِنَّ أَصْحَابَ الْجَنَّةِ الْيَوْمَ فِي شُغُلٍ فَاكِهُونَ [36:55]

Those who are destined for paradise are today happily occupied.

### الآية 36:56

> هُمْ وَأَزْوَاجُهُمْ فِي ظِلَالٍ عَلَى الْأَرَائِكِ مُتَّكِئُونَ [36:56]

Together with their spouses, they will be in shady groves seated on soft couches.

### الآية 36:57

> لَهُمْ فِيهَا فَاكِهَةٌ وَلَهُمْ مَا يَدَّعُونَ [36:57]

There they have fruit and whatever they ask for:

### الآية 36:58

> سَلَامٌ قَوْلًا مِنْ رَبٍّ رَحِيمٍ [36:58]

peace and fulfilment through the word of the Lord who is ever-merciful.

### الآية 36:59

> وَامْتَازُوا الْيَوْمَ أَيُّهَا الْمُجْرِمُونَ [36:59]

‘But stand aside today, you guilty ones!

### الآية 36:60

> ۞ أَلَمْ أَعْهَدْ إِلَيْكُمْ يَا بَنِي آدَمَ أَنْ لَا تَعْبُدُوا الشَّيْطَانَ ۖ إِنَّهُ لَكُمْ عَدُوٌّ مُبِينٌ [36:60]

Children of Adam! Did I not enjoin on you that you should not worship Satan, as he is your open foe,

### الآية 36:61

> وَأَنِ اعْبُدُونِي ۚ هَٰذَا صِرَاطٌ مُسْتَقِيمٌ [36:61]

and that you should worship Me alone? This is the straight path.

### الآية 36:62

> وَلَقَدْ أَضَلَّ مِنْكُمْ جِبِلًّا كَثِيرًا ۖ أَفَلَمْ تَكُونُوا تَعْقِلُونَ [36:62]

‘He had already led astray a great many of you. Could you not, then, use your reason?

### الآية 36:63

> هَٰذِهِ جَهَنَّمُ الَّتِي كُنْتُمْ تُوعَدُونَ [36:63]

‘This, then, is the Hell that you were repeatedly warned against:

### الآية 36:64

> اصْلَوْهَا الْيَوْمَ بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَكْفُرُونَ [36:64]

endure it today for your persistent rejection \[of the truth\].’

### الآية 36:65

> الْيَوْمَ نَخْتِمُ عَلَىٰ أَفْوَاهِهِمْ وَتُكَلِّمُنَا أَيْدِيهِمْ وَتَشْهَدُ أَرْجُلُهُمْ بِمَا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ [36:65]

On that Day We shall set a seal on their mouths, but their hands will speak to Us, and their feet will bear witness to whatever they have done.

### الآية 36:66

> وَلَوْ نَشَاءُ لَطَمَسْنَا عَلَىٰ أَعْيُنِهِمْ فَاسْتَبَقُوا الصِّرَاطَ فَأَنَّىٰ يُبْصِرُونَ [36:66]

Had it been Our will, We could have blotted their eyes. They would have striven to find the way, but how could they have seen it?

### الآية 36:67

> وَلَوْ نَشَاءُ لَمَسَخْنَاهُمْ عَلَىٰ مَكَانَتِهِمْ فَمَا اسْتَطَاعُوا مُضِيًّا وَلَا يَرْجِعُونَ [36:67]

And had it been Our will, We could have paralysed them, right in their places, so that they could not move forward or backward.

### الآية 36:68

> وَمَنْ نُعَمِّرْهُ نُنَكِّسْهُ فِي الْخَلْقِ ۖ أَفَلَا يَعْقِلُونَ [36:68]

If We grant long life to a human being, We also cause him to decline in his powers. Will they not use their reason?

### الآية 36:69

> وَمَا عَلَّمْنَاهُ الشِّعْرَ وَمَا يَنْبَغِي لَهُ ۚ إِنْ هُوَ إِلَّا ذِكْرٌ وَقُرْآنٌ مُبِينٌ [36:69]

We have not taught him \[the Prophet\] poetry; nor is it fitting for him \[to be a poet\]. This is but a reminder and a Qur’an making all things clear,

### الآية 36:70

> لِيُنْذِرَ مَنْ كَانَ حَيًّا وَيَحِقَّ الْقَوْلُ عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ [36:70]

to warn everyone who is alive, and that the word of God be proved against the unbelievers.

### الآية 36:71

> أَوَلَمْ يَرَوْا أَنَّا خَلَقْنَا لَهُمْ مِمَّا عَمِلَتْ أَيْدِينَا أَنْعَامًا فَهُمْ لَهَا مَالِكُونَ [36:71]

Are they not aware that, among all the things Our hands have made, We have created for them cattle which they control.

### الآية 36:72

> وَذَلَّلْنَاهَا لَهُمْ فَمِنْهَا رَكُوبُهُمْ وَمِنْهَا يَأْكُلُونَ [36:72]

We have subjected these to them, so that some of them they use for riding and of some they may eat,

### الآية 36:73

> وَلَهُمْ فِيهَا مَنَافِعُ وَمَشَارِبُ ۖ أَفَلَا يَشْكُرُونَ [36:73]

and they have other benefits from them, and \[milk\] to drink. Will they not give thanks?

### الآية 36:74

> وَاتَّخَذُوا مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ آلِهَةً لَعَلَّهُمْ يُنْصَرُونَ [36:74]

Yet they have taken to worship deities other than God, hoping for \[their\] support.

### الآية 36:75

> لَا يَسْتَطِيعُونَ نَصْرَهُمْ وَهُمْ لَهُمْ جُنْدٌ مُحْضَرُونَ [36:75]

They are unable to support them; yet their worshippers stand like warriors to defend them.

### الآية 36:76

> فَلَا يَحْزُنْكَ قَوْلُهُمْ ۘ إِنَّا نَعْلَمُ مَا يُسِرُّونَ وَمَا يُعْلِنُونَ [36:76]

Let not their words grieve you. We know all that they keep secret as well as all that they bring into the open.

### الآية 36:77

> أَوَلَمْ يَرَ الْإِنْسَانُ أَنَّا خَلَقْنَاهُ مِنْ نُطْفَةٍ فَإِذَا هُوَ خَصِيمٌ مُبِينٌ [36:77]

Is man, then, not aware that it is We who create him out of a gamete; and then he becomes flagrantly contentious.

### الآية 36:78

> وَضَرَبَ لَنَا مَثَلًا وَنَسِيَ خَلْقَهُ ۖ قَالَ مَنْ يُحْيِي الْعِظَامَ وَهِيَ رَمِيمٌ [36:78]

He comes up with arguments against Us, forgetting how he himself was created. He asks: ‘Who could give life to bones that have crumbled to dust?’

### الآية 36:79

> قُلْ يُحْيِيهَا الَّذِي أَنْشَأَهَا أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ ۖ وَهُوَ بِكُلِّ خَلْقٍ عَلِيمٌ [36:79]

Say: ‘He who brought them into being in the first instance will give them life again. He has full knowledge of every act of creation.

### الآية 36:80

> الَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمْ مِنَ الشَّجَرِ الْأَخْضَرِ نَارًا فَإِذَا أَنْتُمْ مِنْهُ تُوقِدُونَ [36:80]

It is He who produces for you fire out of the green tree, and from this you kindle your fires’.

### الآية 36:81

> أَوَلَيْسَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ بِقَادِرٍ عَلَىٰ أَنْ يَخْلُقَ مِثْلَهُمْ ۚ بَلَىٰ وَهُوَ الْخَلَّاقُ الْعَلِيمُ [36:81]

Is, then, He who has created the heavens and the earth unable to create their like? Of course He can. He alone is the Supreme Creator, the All-Knowing.

### الآية 36:82

> إِنَّمَا أَمْرُهُ إِذَا أَرَادَ شَيْئًا أَنْ يَقُولَ لَهُ كُنْ فَيَكُونُ [36:82]

When He intends something to be, He only says to it, ‘Be’, and it is.

### الآية 36:83

> فَسُبْحَانَ الَّذِي بِيَدِهِ مَلَكُوتُ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَإِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ [36:83]

Limitless, then, in His glory is He in whose hand rests the mighty dominion over all things, and to Him you all will be brought back.
