### الآية 37:1

> وَالصَّافَّاتِ صَفًّا [37:1]

(1) By those \[angels\] lined up in rows

### الآية 37:2

> فَالزَّاجِرَاتِ زَجْرًا [37:2]

(2) And those who drive \[the clouds\]

### الآية 37:3

> فَالتَّالِيَاتِ ذِكْرًا [37:3]

(3) And those who recite the message,\[1286\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1286\]- To the prophets or among themselves. Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) swears by these three kinds of angels to the fact mentioned in the following verse.

### الآية 37:4

> إِنَّ إِلَٰهَكُمْ لَوَاحِدٌ [37:4]

(4) Indeed, your God is One,

### الآية 37:5

> رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا وَرَبُّ الْمَشَارِقِ [37:5]

(5) Lord of the heavens and the earth and that between them and Lord of the sunrises.\[1287\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1287\]- i.e., each point or place of sunrise.

### الآية 37:6

> إِنَّا زَيَّنَّا السَّمَاءَ الدُّنْيَا بِزِينَةٍ الْكَوَاكِبِ [37:6]

(6) Indeed, We have adorned the nearest heaven with an adornment of stars

### الآية 37:7

> وَحِفْظًا مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ مَارِدٍ [37:7]

(7) And as protection against every rebellious devil

### الآية 37:8

> لَا يَسَّمَّعُونَ إِلَى الْمَلَإِ الْأَعْلَىٰ وَيُقْذَفُونَ مِنْ كُلِّ جَانِبٍ [37:8]

(8) \[So\] they may not listen to the exalted assembly \[of angels\] and are pelted from every side,\[1288\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1288\]- By flaming meteors.

### الآية 37:9

> دُحُورًا ۖ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ وَاصِبٌ [37:9]

(9) Repelled; and for them is a constant punishment,

### الآية 37:10

> إِلَّا مَنْ خَطِفَ الْخَطْفَةَ فَأَتْبَعَهُ شِهَابٌ ثَاقِبٌ [37:10]

(10) Except one who snatches \[some words\] by theft, but they are pursued by a burning flame, piercing \[in brightness\].

### الآية 37:11

> فَاسْتَفْتِهِمْ أَهُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقًا أَمْ مَنْ خَلَقْنَا ۚ إِنَّا خَلَقْنَاهُمْ مِنْ طِينٍ لَازِبٍ [37:11]

(11) Then inquire of them, \[O Muḥammad\], "Are they a stronger \[or more difficult\] creation or those \[others\] We have created?" Indeed, We created them \[i.e., men\] from sticky clay.

### الآية 37:12

> بَلْ عَجِبْتَ وَيَسْخَرُونَ [37:12]

(12) But you wonder, while they mock,

### الآية 37:13

> وَإِذَا ذُكِّرُوا لَا يَذْكُرُونَ [37:13]

(13) And when they are reminded, they remember not.

### الآية 37:14

> وَإِذَا رَأَوْا آيَةً يَسْتَسْخِرُونَ [37:14]

(14) And when they see a sign, they ridicule.

### الآية 37:15

> وَقَالُوا إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا سِحْرٌ مُبِينٌ [37:15]

(15) And say, "This is not but obvious magic.

### الآية 37:16

> أَإِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَامًا أَإِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ [37:16]

(16) When we have died and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?

### الآية 37:17

> أَوَآبَاؤُنَا الْأَوَّلُونَ [37:17]

(17) And our forefathers \[as well\]?"

### الآية 37:18

> قُلْ نَعَمْ وَأَنْتُمْ دَاخِرُونَ [37:18]

(18) Say, "Yes, and you will be \[rendered\] contemptible."

### الآية 37:19

> فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ زَجْرَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ فَإِذَا هُمْ يَنْظُرُونَ [37:19]

(19) It will be only one shout, and at once they will be observing.

### الآية 37:20

> وَقَالُوا يَا وَيْلَنَا هَٰذَا يَوْمُ الدِّينِ [37:20]

(20) They will say, "O woe to us! This is the Day of Recompense."

### الآية 37:21

> هَٰذَا يَوْمُ الْفَصْلِ الَّذِي كُنْتُمْ بِهِ تُكَذِّبُونَ [37:21]

(21) \[They will be told\], "This is the Day of Judgement which you used to deny."

### الآية 37:22

> ۞ احْشُرُوا الَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا وَأَزْوَاجَهُمْ وَمَا كَانُوا يَعْبُدُونَ [37:22]

(22) \[The angels will be ordered\], "Gather those who committed wrong, their kinds,\[1289\] and what they used to worship
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1289\]- Those similar to them in evil deeds. Another possible meaning is "their wives."

### الآية 37:23

> مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ فَاهْدُوهُمْ إِلَىٰ صِرَاطِ الْجَحِيمِ [37:23]

(23) Other than Allāh, and guide them to the path of Hellfire

### الآية 37:24

> وَقِفُوهُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ مَسْئُولُونَ [37:24]

(24) And stop them; indeed, they are to be questioned."

### الآية 37:25

> مَا لَكُمْ لَا تَنَاصَرُونَ [37:25]

(25) \[They will be asked\], "What is \[wrong\] with you? Why do you not help each other?"

### الآية 37:26

> بَلْ هُمُ الْيَوْمَ مُسْتَسْلِمُونَ [37:26]

(26) But they, that Day, are in surrender.

### الآية 37:27

> وَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ [37:27]

(27) And they will approach one another asking \[i.e., blaming\] each other.

### الآية 37:28

> قَالُوا إِنَّكُمْ كُنْتُمْ تَأْتُونَنَا عَنِ الْيَمِينِ [37:28]

(28) They will say, "Indeed, you used to come at us from the right."\[1290\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1290\]- i.e., from our position of strength, oppressing us. Or from where we would have grasped the truth, preventing us.

### الآية 37:29

> قَالُوا بَلْ لَمْ تَكُونُوا مُؤْمِنِينَ [37:29]

(29) They \[i.e., the oppressors\] will say, "Rather, you \[yourselves\] were not believers,

### الآية 37:30

> وَمَا كَانَ لَنَا عَلَيْكُمْ مِنْ سُلْطَانٍ ۖ بَلْ كُنْتُمْ قَوْمًا طَاغِينَ [37:30]

(30) And we had over you no authority, but you were a transgressing people.

### الآية 37:31

> فَحَقَّ عَلَيْنَا قَوْلُ رَبِّنَا ۖ إِنَّا لَذَائِقُونَ [37:31]

(31) So the word \[i.e., decree\] of our Lord has come into effect upon us; indeed, we will taste \[punishment\].

### الآية 37:32

> فَأَغْوَيْنَاكُمْ إِنَّا كُنَّا غَاوِينَ [37:32]

(32) And we led you to deviation; indeed, we were deviators."

### الآية 37:33

> فَإِنَّهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ فِي الْعَذَابِ مُشْتَرِكُونَ [37:33]

(33) So indeed they, that Day, will be sharing in the punishment.

### الآية 37:34

> إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَفْعَلُ بِالْمُجْرِمِينَ [37:34]

(34) Indeed, that is how We deal with the criminals.

### الآية 37:35

> إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا إِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ يَسْتَكْبِرُونَ [37:35]

(35) Indeed they, when it was said to them, "There is no deity but Allāh," were arrogant

### الآية 37:36

> وَيَقُولُونَ أَئِنَّا لَتَارِكُو آلِهَتِنَا لِشَاعِرٍ مَجْنُونٍ [37:36]

(36) And were saying, "Are we to leave our gods for a mad poet?"

### الآية 37:37

> بَلْ جَاءَ بِالْحَقِّ وَصَدَّقَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ [37:37]

(37) Rather, he \[i.e., the Prophet (ﷺ)\] has come with the truth and confirmed the \[previous\] messengers.

### الآية 37:38

> إِنَّكُمْ لَذَائِقُو الْعَذَابِ الْأَلِيمِ [37:38]

(38) Indeed, you \[disbelievers\] will be tasters of the painful punishment,

### الآية 37:39

> وَمَا تُجْزَوْنَ إِلَّا مَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ [37:39]

(39) And you will not be recompensed except for what you used to do -

### الآية 37:40

> إِلَّا عِبَادَ اللَّهِ الْمُخْلَصِينَ [37:40]

(40) But not the chosen servants of Allāh.

### الآية 37:41

> أُولَٰئِكَ لَهُمْ رِزْقٌ مَعْلُومٌ [37:41]

(41) Those will have a provision determined -

### الآية 37:42

> فَوَاكِهُ ۖ وَهُمْ مُكْرَمُونَ [37:42]

(42) Fruits;\[1291\] and they will be honored
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1291\]- Meaning everything delicious.

### الآية 37:43

> فِي جَنَّاتِ النَّعِيمِ [37:43]

(43) In gardens of pleasure

### الآية 37:44

> عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مُتَقَابِلِينَ [37:44]

(44) On thrones facing one another.

### الآية 37:45

> يُطَافُ عَلَيْهِمْ بِكَأْسٍ مِنْ مَعِينٍ [37:45]

(45) There will be circulated among them a cup \[of wine\] from a flowing spring,

### الآية 37:46

> بَيْضَاءَ لَذَّةٍ لِلشَّارِبِينَ [37:46]

(46) White and delicious to the drinkers;

### الآية 37:47

> لَا فِيهَا غَوْلٌ وَلَا هُمْ عَنْهَا يُنْزَفُونَ [37:47]

(47) No bad effect is there in it, nor from it will they be intoxicated.

### الآية 37:48

> وَعِنْدَهُمْ قَاصِرَاتُ الطَّرْفِ عِينٌ [37:48]

(48) And with them will be women limiting \[their\] glances,\[1292\] with large, \[beautiful\] eyes,
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1292\]- i.e., chaste and modest, looking only at their mates.

### الآية 37:49

> كَأَنَّهُنَّ بَيْضٌ مَكْنُونٌ [37:49]

(49) As if they were \[delicate\] eggs, well-protected.

### الآية 37:50

> فَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ [37:50]

(50) And they will approach one another, inquiring of each other.

### الآية 37:51

> قَالَ قَائِلٌ مِنْهُمْ إِنِّي كَانَ لِي قَرِينٌ [37:51]

(51) A speaker among them will say, "Indeed, I had a companion \[on earth\].

### الآية 37:52

> يَقُولُ أَإِنَّكَ لَمِنَ الْمُصَدِّقِينَ [37:52]

(52) Who would say, 'Are you indeed of those who believe

### الآية 37:53

> أَإِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَامًا أَإِنَّا لَمَدِينُونَ [37:53]

(53) That when we have died and become dust and bones, we will indeed be recompensed?'"

### الآية 37:54

> قَالَ هَلْ أَنْتُمْ مُطَّلِعُونَ [37:54]

(54) He will say,\[1293\] "Would you \[care to\] look?"
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1293\]- To his companions in Paradise.

### الآية 37:55

> فَاطَّلَعَ فَرَآهُ فِي سَوَاءِ الْجَحِيمِ [37:55]

(55) And he will look and see him\[1294\] in the midst of the Hellfire.
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1294\]- The companion who had tried to dissuade him from belief on earth.

### الآية 37:56

> قَالَ تَاللَّهِ إِنْ كِدْتَ لَتُرْدِينِ [37:56]

(56) He will say, "By Allāh, you almost ruined me.

### الآية 37:57

> وَلَوْلَا نِعْمَةُ رَبِّي لَكُنْتُ مِنَ الْمُحْضَرِينَ [37:57]

(57) If not for the favor of my Lord, I would have been of those brought in \[to Hell\].

### الآية 37:58

> أَفَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَيِّتِينَ [37:58]

(58) Then, are we not to die

### الآية 37:59

> إِلَّا مَوْتَتَنَا الْأُولَىٰ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُعَذَّبِينَ [37:59]

(59) Except for our first death, and we will not be punished?"

### الآية 37:60

> إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ [37:60]

(60) Indeed, this is the great attainment.

### الآية 37:61

> لِمِثْلِ هَٰذَا فَلْيَعْمَلِ الْعَامِلُونَ [37:61]

(61) For the like of this let the workers \[on earth\] work.

### الآية 37:62

> أَذَٰلِكَ خَيْرٌ نُزُلًا أَمْ شَجَرَةُ الزَّقُّومِ [37:62]

(62) Is that \[i.e., Paradise\] a better accommodation or the tree of zaqqūm?

### الآية 37:63

> إِنَّا جَعَلْنَاهَا فِتْنَةً لِلظَّالِمِينَ [37:63]

(63) Indeed, We have made it a torment for the wrongdoers.

### الآية 37:64

> إِنَّهَا شَجَرَةٌ تَخْرُجُ فِي أَصْلِ الْجَحِيمِ [37:64]

(64) Indeed, it is a tree issuing from the bottom of the Hellfire,

### الآية 37:65

> طَلْعُهَا كَأَنَّهُ رُءُوسُ الشَّيَاطِينِ [37:65]

(65) Its emerging fruit as if it was heads of the devils.

### الآية 37:66

> فَإِنَّهُمْ لَآكِلُونَ مِنْهَا فَمَالِئُونَ مِنْهَا الْبُطُونَ [37:66]

(66) And indeed, they will eat from it and fill with it their bellies.

### الآية 37:67

> ثُمَّ إِنَّ لَهُمْ عَلَيْهَا لَشَوْبًا مِنْ حَمِيمٍ [37:67]

(67) Then indeed, they will have after it a mixture of scalding water.

### الآية 37:68

> ثُمَّ إِنَّ مَرْجِعَهُمْ لَإِلَى الْجَحِيمِ [37:68]

(68) Then indeed, their return will be to the Hellfire.

### الآية 37:69

> إِنَّهُمْ أَلْفَوْا آبَاءَهُمْ ضَالِّينَ [37:69]

(69) Indeed they found their fathers astray.

### الآية 37:70

> فَهُمْ عَلَىٰ آثَارِهِمْ يُهْرَعُونَ [37:70]

(70) So they hastened \[to follow\] in their footsteps.

### الآية 37:71

> وَلَقَدْ ضَلَّ قَبْلَهُمْ أَكْثَرُ الْأَوَّلِينَ [37:71]

(71) And there had already strayed before them most of the former peoples,

### الآية 37:72

> وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلْنَا فِيهِمْ مُنْذِرِينَ [37:72]

(72) And We had already sent among them warners.

### الآية 37:73

> فَانْظُرْ كَيْفَ كَانَ عَاقِبَةُ الْمُنْذَرِينَ [37:73]

(73) Then look how was the end of those who were warned -

### الآية 37:74

> إِلَّا عِبَادَ اللَّهِ الْمُخْلَصِينَ [37:74]

(74) But not the chosen servants of Allāh.

### الآية 37:75

> وَلَقَدْ نَادَانَا نُوحٌ فَلَنِعْمَ الْمُجِيبُونَ [37:75]

(75) And Noah had certainly called Us, and \[We are\] the best of responders.

### الآية 37:76

> وَنَجَّيْنَاهُ وَأَهْلَهُ مِنَ الْكَرْبِ الْعَظِيمِ [37:76]

(76) And We saved him and his family from the great affliction.

### الآية 37:77

> وَجَعَلْنَا ذُرِّيَّتَهُ هُمُ الْبَاقِينَ [37:77]

(77) And We made his descendants those remaining \[on the earth\]

### الآية 37:78

> وَتَرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ فِي الْآخِرِينَ [37:78]

(78) And left for him \[favorable mention\] among later generations:

### الآية 37:79

> سَلَامٌ عَلَىٰ نُوحٍ فِي الْعَالَمِينَ [37:79]

(79) "Peace upon Noah among the worlds."

### الآية 37:80

> إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِي الْمُحْسِنِينَ [37:80]

(80) Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

### الآية 37:81

> إِنَّهُ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا الْمُؤْمِنِينَ [37:81]

(81) Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.

### الآية 37:82

> ثُمَّ أَغْرَقْنَا الْآخَرِينَ [37:82]

(82) Then We drowned the others \[i.e., disbelievers\].

### الآية 37:83

> ۞ وَإِنَّ مِنْ شِيعَتِهِ لَإِبْرَاهِيمَ [37:83]

(83) And indeed, among his kind was Abraham,

### الآية 37:84

> إِذْ جَاءَ رَبَّهُ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ [37:84]

(84) When he came to his Lord with a sound heart

### الآية 37:85

> إِذْ قَالَ لِأَبِيهِ وَقَوْمِهِ مَاذَا تَعْبُدُونَ [37:85]

(85) \[And\] when he said to his father and his people, "What do you worship?

### الآية 37:86

> أَئِفْكًا آلِهَةً دُونَ اللَّهِ تُرِيدُونَ [37:86]

(86) Is it falsehood \[as\] gods other than Allāh you desire?

### الآية 37:87

> فَمَا ظَنُّكُمْ بِرَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ [37:87]

(87) Then what is your thought about the Lord of the worlds?"

### الآية 37:88

> فَنَظَرَ نَظْرَةً فِي النُّجُومِ [37:88]

(88) And he cast a look at the stars.

### الآية 37:89

> فَقَالَ إِنِّي سَقِيمٌ [37:89]

(89) And said, "Indeed, I am \[about to be\] ill."

### الآية 37:90

> فَتَوَلَّوْا عَنْهُ مُدْبِرِينَ [37:90]

(90) So they turned away from him, departing.

### الآية 37:91

> فَرَاغَ إِلَىٰ آلِهَتِهِمْ فَقَالَ أَلَا تَأْكُلُونَ [37:91]

(91) Then he turned to their gods and said, "Do you not eat?\[1295\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1295\]- Consume the offerings placed before them.

### الآية 37:92

> مَا لَكُمْ لَا تَنْطِقُونَ [37:92]

(92) What is \[wrong\] with you that you do not speak?".

### الآية 37:93

> فَرَاغَ عَلَيْهِمْ ضَرْبًا بِالْيَمِينِ [37:93]

(93) And he turned upon them a blow with \[his\] right hand.

### الآية 37:94

> فَأَقْبَلُوا إِلَيْهِ يَزِفُّونَ [37:94]

(94) Then they \[i.e., the people\] came toward him, hastening.

### الآية 37:95

> قَالَ أَتَعْبُدُونَ مَا تَنْحِتُونَ [37:95]

(95) He said, "Do you worship that which you \[yourselves\] carve,

### الآية 37:96

> وَاللَّهُ خَلَقَكُمْ وَمَا تَعْمَلُونَ [37:96]

(96) While Allāh created you and that which you do?"

### الآية 37:97

> قَالُوا ابْنُوا لَهُ بُنْيَانًا فَأَلْقُوهُ فِي الْجَحِيمِ [37:97]

(97) They said, "Construct for him a structure \[i.e., furnace\] and throw him into the burning fire."

### الآية 37:98

> فَأَرَادُوا بِهِ كَيْدًا فَجَعَلْنَاهُمُ الْأَسْفَلِينَ [37:98]

(98) And they intended for him a plan \[i.e., harm\], but We made them the most debased.

### الآية 37:99

> وَقَالَ إِنِّي ذَاهِبٌ إِلَىٰ رَبِّي سَيَهْدِينِ [37:99]

(99) And \[then\] he said, "Indeed, I will go to \[where I am ordered by\] my Lord; He will guide me.

### الآية 37:100

> رَبِّ هَبْ لِي مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ [37:100]

(100) My Lord, grant me \[a child\] from among the righteous."

### الآية 37:101

> فَبَشَّرْنَاهُ بِغُلَامٍ حَلِيمٍ [37:101]

(101) So We gave him good tidings of a forbearing boy.

### الآية 37:102

> فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ مَعَهُ السَّعْيَ قَالَ يَا بُنَيَّ إِنِّي أَرَىٰ فِي الْمَنَامِ أَنِّي أَذْبَحُكَ فَانْظُرْ مَاذَا تَرَىٰ ۚ قَالَ يَا أَبَتِ افْعَلْ مَا تُؤْمَرُ ۖ سَتَجِدُنِي إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ مِنَ الصَّابِرِينَ [37:102]

(102) And when he reached with him \[the age of\] exertion,\[1296\] he said, "O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I \[must\] sacrifice you, so see what you think." He said, "O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allāh wills, of the steadfast."
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1296\]- i.e., the ability to work and be of assistance.

### الآية 37:103

> فَلَمَّا أَسْلَمَا وَتَلَّهُ لِلْجَبِينِ [37:103]

(103) And when they had both submitted\[1297\] and he put him down upon his forehead,
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1297\]- To the command of Allāh.

### الآية 37:104

> وَنَادَيْنَاهُ أَنْ يَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ [37:104]

(104) We called to him, "O Abraham,

### الآية 37:105

> قَدْ صَدَّقْتَ الرُّؤْيَا ۚ إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِي الْمُحْسِنِينَ [37:105]

(105) You have fulfilled the vision." Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

### الآية 37:106

> إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ الْبَلَاءُ الْمُبِينُ [37:106]

(106) Indeed, this was the clear trial.

### الآية 37:107

> وَفَدَيْنَاهُ بِذِبْحٍ عَظِيمٍ [37:107]

(107) And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice,\[1298\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1298\]- Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) sent a huge ram to be sacrificed in place of Ishmael.

### الآية 37:108

> وَتَرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ فِي الْآخِرِينَ [37:108]

(108) And We left for him \[favorable mention\] among later generations:

### الآية 37:109

> سَلَامٌ عَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ [37:109]

(109) "Peace upon Abraham."

### الآية 37:110

> كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِي الْمُحْسِنِينَ [37:110]

(110) Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

### الآية 37:111

> إِنَّهُ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا الْمُؤْمِنِينَ [37:111]

(111) Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.

### الآية 37:112

> وَبَشَّرْنَاهُ بِإِسْحَاقَ نَبِيًّا مِنَ الصَّالِحِينَ [37:112]

(112) And We gave him good tidings of Isaac, a prophet from among the righteous.\[1299\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1299\]- This verifies that the firstborn son who was to be sacrificed was Ishmael and not Isaac, as claimed by the Jews and Christians.

### الآية 37:113

> وَبَارَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ وَعَلَىٰ إِسْحَاقَ ۚ وَمِنْ ذُرِّيَّتِهِمَا مُحْسِنٌ وَظَالِمٌ لِنَفْسِهِ مُبِينٌ [37:113]

(113) And We blessed him and Isaac. But among their descendants is the doer of good and the clearly unjust to himself \[i.e., sinner\].

### الآية 37:114

> وَلَقَدْ مَنَنَّا عَلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ وَهَارُونَ [37:114]

(114) And We did certainly confer favor upon Moses and Aaron.

### الآية 37:115

> وَنَجَّيْنَاهُمَا وَقَوْمَهُمَا مِنَ الْكَرْبِ الْعَظِيمِ [37:115]

(115) And We saved them and their people from the great affliction,

### الآية 37:116

> وَنَصَرْنَاهُمْ فَكَانُوا هُمُ الْغَالِبِينَ [37:116]

(116) And We supported them so it was they who overcame.

### الآية 37:117

> وَآتَيْنَاهُمَا الْكِتَابَ الْمُسْتَبِينَ [37:117]

(117) And We gave them the explicit Scripture \[i.e., the Torah\],

### الآية 37:118

> وَهَدَيْنَاهُمَا الصِّرَاطَ الْمُسْتَقِيمَ [37:118]

(118) And We guided them on the straight path.

### الآية 37:119

> وَتَرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِمَا فِي الْآخِرِينَ [37:119]

(119) And We left for them \[favorable mention\] among later generations:

### الآية 37:120

> سَلَامٌ عَلَىٰ مُوسَىٰ وَهَارُونَ [37:120]

(120) "Peace upon Moses and Aaron."

### الآية 37:121

> إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِي الْمُحْسِنِينَ [37:121]

(121) Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

### الآية 37:122

> إِنَّهُمَا مِنْ عِبَادِنَا الْمُؤْمِنِينَ [37:122]

(122) Indeed, they were of Our believing servants.

### الآية 37:123

> وَإِنَّ إِلْيَاسَ لَمِنَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ [37:123]

(123) And indeed, Elias was from among the messengers,

### الآية 37:124

> إِذْ قَالَ لِقَوْمِهِ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ [37:124]

(124) When he said to his people, "Will you not fear Allāh?

### الآية 37:125

> أَتَدْعُونَ بَعْلًا وَتَذَرُونَ أَحْسَنَ الْخَالِقِينَ [37:125]

(125) Do you call upon Baʿl\[1300\] and leave the best of creators -
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1300\]- The name of a great idol worshipped by the people and said to mean "lord."

### الآية 37:126

> اللَّهَ رَبَّكُمْ وَرَبَّ آبَائِكُمُ الْأَوَّلِينَ [37:126]

(126) Allāh, your Lord and the Lord of your first forefathers?"

### الآية 37:127

> فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَإِنَّهُمْ لَمُحْضَرُونَ [37:127]

(127) And they denied him, so indeed, they will be brought \[for punishment\],

### الآية 37:128

> إِلَّا عِبَادَ اللَّهِ الْمُخْلَصِينَ [37:128]

(128) Except the chosen servants of Allāh.

### الآية 37:129

> وَتَرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ فِي الْآخِرِينَ [37:129]

(129) And We left for him \[favorable mention\] among later generations:

### الآية 37:130

> سَلَامٌ عَلَىٰ إِلْ يَاسِينَ [37:130]

(130) "Peace upon Elias."\[1301\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1301\]- Ilyāseen is said by some commentators to be a plural form, meaning "Elias and those who followed him."

### الآية 37:131

> إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِي الْمُحْسِنِينَ [37:131]

(131) Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.

### الآية 37:132

> إِنَّهُ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا الْمُؤْمِنِينَ [37:132]

(132) Indeed, he was of Our believing servants.

### الآية 37:133

> وَإِنَّ لُوطًا لَمِنَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ [37:133]

(133) And indeed, Lot was among the messengers.

### الآية 37:134

> إِذْ نَجَّيْنَاهُ وَأَهْلَهُ أَجْمَعِينَ [37:134]

(134) \[So mention\] when We saved him and his family, all,

### الآية 37:135

> إِلَّا عَجُوزًا فِي الْغَابِرِينَ [37:135]

(135) Except an old woman \[i.e., his wife\] among those who remained \[with the evildoers\].

### الآية 37:136

> ثُمَّ دَمَّرْنَا الْآخَرِينَ [37:136]

(136) Then We destroyed the others.

### الآية 37:137

> وَإِنَّكُمْ لَتَمُرُّونَ عَلَيْهِمْ مُصْبِحِينَ [37:137]

(137) And indeed, you pass by them in the morning

### الآية 37:138

> وَبِاللَّيْلِ ۗ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ [37:138]

(138) And at night. Then will you not use reason?

### الآية 37:139

> وَإِنَّ يُونُسَ لَمِنَ الْمُرْسَلِينَ [37:139]

(139) And indeed, Jonah was among the messengers.

### الآية 37:140

> إِذْ أَبَقَ إِلَى الْفُلْكِ الْمَشْحُونِ [37:140]

(140) \[Mention\] when he ran away to the laden ship.

### الآية 37:141

> فَسَاهَمَ فَكَانَ مِنَ الْمُدْحَضِينَ [37:141]

(141) And he drew lots\[1302\] and was among the losers.
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1302\]- To determine who would be cast overboard in order to save the other passengers. Having been overloaded, the ship was on the verge of sinking.

### الآية 37:142

> فَالْتَقَمَهُ الْحُوتُ وَهُوَ مُلِيمٌ [37:142]

(142) Then the fish swallowed him, while he was blameworthy.\[1303\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1303\]- For having given up hope on his people prematurely and having left them without permission from Allāh.

### الآية 37:143

> فَلَوْلَا أَنَّهُ كَانَ مِنَ الْمُسَبِّحِينَ [37:143]

(143) And had he not been of those who exalt Allāh,

### الآية 37:144

> لَلَبِثَ فِي بَطْنِهِ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ [37:144]

(144) He would have remained inside its belly until the Day they are resurrected.\[1304\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1304\]- Meaning that the belly of the fish would have become his grave.

### الآية 37:145

> ۞ فَنَبَذْنَاهُ بِالْعَرَاءِ وَهُوَ سَقِيمٌ [37:145]

(145) But We threw him onto the open shore while he was ill.

### الآية 37:146

> وَأَنْبَتْنَا عَلَيْهِ شَجَرَةً مِنْ يَقْطِينٍ [37:146]

(146) And We caused to grow over him a gourd vine.\[1305\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1305\]- Which is known to give cooling shade and to be a repellent of flies.

### الآية 37:147

> وَأَرْسَلْنَاهُ إِلَىٰ مِائَةِ أَلْفٍ أَوْ يَزِيدُونَ [37:147]

(147) And We sent him\[1306\] to \[his people of\] a hundred thousand or more.
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1306\]- i.e., returned him thereafter.

### الآية 37:148

> فَآمَنُوا فَمَتَّعْنَاهُمْ إِلَىٰ حِينٍ [37:148]

(148) And they believed, so We gave them enjoyment \[of life\] for a time.

### الآية 37:149

> فَاسْتَفْتِهِمْ أَلِرَبِّكَ الْبَنَاتُ وَلَهُمُ الْبَنُونَ [37:149]

(149) So inquire of them, \[O Muḥammad\], "Does your Lord have daughters while they have sons?\[1307\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1307\]- The people of Makkah claimed that the angels were daughters of Allāh, yet they preferred sons for themselves.

### الآية 37:150

> أَمْ خَلَقْنَا الْمَلَائِكَةَ إِنَاثًا وَهُمْ شَاهِدُونَ [37:150]

(150) Or did We create the angels as females while they were witnesses?"

### الآية 37:151

> أَلَا إِنَّهُمْ مِنْ إِفْكِهِمْ لَيَقُولُونَ [37:151]

(151) Unquestionably, it is out of their \[invented\] falsehood that they say,

### الآية 37:152

> وَلَدَ اللَّهُ وَإِنَّهُمْ لَكَاذِبُونَ [37:152]

(152) "Allāh has begotten," and indeed, they are liars.

### الآية 37:153

> أَصْطَفَى الْبَنَاتِ عَلَى الْبَنِينَ [37:153]

(153) Has He chosen daughters over sons?

### الآية 37:154

> مَا لَكُمْ كَيْفَ تَحْكُمُونَ [37:154]

(154) What is \[wrong\] with you? How do you make judgement?

### الآية 37:155

> أَفَلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ [37:155]

(155) Then will you not be reminded?

### الآية 37:156

> أَمْ لَكُمْ سُلْطَانٌ مُبِينٌ [37:156]

(156) Or do you have a clear authority?\[1308\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1308\]- i.e., evidence.

### الآية 37:157

> فَأْتُوا بِكِتَابِكُمْ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ [37:157]

(157) Then produce your scripture, if you should be truthful.

### الآية 37:158

> وَجَعَلُوا بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ الْجِنَّةِ نَسَبًا ۚ وَلَقَدْ عَلِمَتِ الْجِنَّةُ إِنَّهُمْ لَمُحْضَرُونَ [37:158]

(158) And they have made \[i.e., claimed\] between Him and the jinn a lineage, but the jinn have already known that they \[who made such claims\] will be brought \[to punishment\].

### الآية 37:159

> سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ [37:159]

(159) Exalted is Allāh above what they describe,

### الآية 37:160

> إِلَّا عِبَادَ اللَّهِ الْمُخْلَصِينَ [37:160]

(160) Except the chosen servants of Allāh \[who do not share in that sin\].

### الآية 37:161

> فَإِنَّكُمْ وَمَا تَعْبُدُونَ [37:161]

(161) So indeed, you \[disbelievers\] and whatever you worship,

### الآية 37:162

> مَا أَنْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ بِفَاتِنِينَ [37:162]

(162) You cannot tempt \[anyone\] away from Him

### الآية 37:163

> إِلَّا مَنْ هُوَ صَالِ الْجَحِيمِ [37:163]

(163) Except he who is to \[enter and\] burn in the Hellfire.\[1309\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1309\]- Due to his disbelief and evil deeds.

### الآية 37:164

> وَمَا مِنَّا إِلَّا لَهُ مَقَامٌ مَعْلُومٌ [37:164]

(164) \[The angels say\],\[1310\] "There is not among us any except that he has a known position.\[1311\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1310\]- Refuting what the disbelievers had said about them.
\[1311\]- For worship. Or "an assigned task" to perform.

### الآية 37:165

> وَإِنَّا لَنَحْنُ الصَّافُّونَ [37:165]

(165) And indeed, we are those who line up \[for prayer\].

### الآية 37:166

> وَإِنَّا لَنَحْنُ الْمُسَبِّحُونَ [37:166]

(166) And indeed, we are those who exalt Allāh."

### الآية 37:167

> وَإِنْ كَانُوا لَيَقُولُونَ [37:167]

(167) And indeed, they \[i.e., the disbelievers\] used to say,\[1312\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1312\]- Before the revelation of the Qur’ān.

### الآية 37:168

> لَوْ أَنَّ عِنْدَنَا ذِكْرًا مِنَ الْأَوَّلِينَ [37:168]

(168) "If we had a message from \[those of\] the former peoples,

### الآية 37:169

> لَكُنَّا عِبَادَ اللَّهِ الْمُخْلَصِينَ [37:169]

(169) We would have been the chosen servants of Allāh."

### الآية 37:170

> فَكَفَرُوا بِهِ ۖ فَسَوْفَ يَعْلَمُونَ [37:170]

(170) But they disbelieved in it,\[1313\] so they are going to know.
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1313\]- i.e., in their own message, the Qur’ān.

### الآية 37:171

> وَلَقَدْ سَبَقَتْ كَلِمَتُنَا لِعِبَادِنَا الْمُرْسَلِينَ [37:171]

(171) And Our word \[i.e., decree\] has already preceded for Our servants, the messengers,

### الآية 37:172

> إِنَّهُمْ لَهُمُ الْمَنْصُورُونَ [37:172]

(172) \[That\] indeed, they would be those given victory

### الآية 37:173

> وَإِنَّ جُنْدَنَا لَهُمُ الْغَالِبُونَ [37:173]

(173) And \[that\] indeed, Our soldiers \[i.e., the believers\] will be those who overcome.\[1314\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1314\]- If not in this world, then definitely in the Hereafter.

### الآية 37:174

> فَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ حَتَّىٰ حِينٍ [37:174]

(174) So, \[O Muḥammad\], leave them for a time.

### الآية 37:175

> وَأَبْصِرْهُمْ فَسَوْفَ يُبْصِرُونَ [37:175]

(175) And see \[what will befall\] them, for they are going to see.

### الآية 37:176

> أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا يَسْتَعْجِلُونَ [37:176]

(176) Then for Our punishment are they impatient?

### الآية 37:177

> فَإِذَا نَزَلَ بِسَاحَتِهِمْ فَسَاءَ صَبَاحُ الْمُنْذَرِينَ [37:177]

(177) But when it descends in their territory, then evil is the morning of those who were warned.

### الآية 37:178

> وَتَوَلَّ عَنْهُمْ حَتَّىٰ حِينٍ [37:178]

(178) And leave them for a time.

### الآية 37:179

> وَأَبْصِرْ فَسَوْفَ يُبْصِرُونَ [37:179]

(179) And see, for they are going to see.

### الآية 37:180

> سُبْحَانَ رَبِّكَ رَبِّ الْعِزَّةِ عَمَّا يَصِفُونَ [37:180]

(180) Exalted is your Lord, the Lord of might, above what they describe.

### الآية 37:181

> وَسَلَامٌ عَلَى الْمُرْسَلِينَ [37:181]

(181) And peace upon the messengers.

### الآية 37:182

> وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ [37:182]

(182) And praise to Allāh, Lord of the worlds.
