### الآية 52:1

> وَالطُّورِ [52:1]

(1) By the mount

### الآية 52:2

> وَكِتَابٍ مَسْطُورٍ [52:2]

(2) And \[by\] a Book inscribed\[1550\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1550\]- Interpreted as the Preserved Slate or possibly the Qur’ān.

### الآية 52:3

> فِي رَقٍّ مَنْشُورٍ [52:3]

(3) In parchment spread open

### الآية 52:4

> وَالْبَيْتِ الْمَعْمُورِ [52:4]

(4) And \[by\] the frequented House\[1551\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1551\]- The house of worship for the angels in the seventh heaven, comparable to the Kaʿbah on earth.

### الآية 52:5

> وَالسَّقْفِ الْمَرْفُوعِ [52:5]

(5) And \[by\] the ceiling \[i.e., heaven\] raised high

### الآية 52:6

> وَالْبَحْرِ الْمَسْجُورِ [52:6]

(6) And \[by\] the sea set on fire,\[1552\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1552\]- On the Day of Resurrection. Or "the sea which has overflowed."

### الآية 52:7

> إِنَّ عَذَابَ رَبِّكَ لَوَاقِعٌ [52:7]

(7) Indeed, the punishment of your Lord will occur.

### الآية 52:8

> مَا لَهُ مِنْ دَافِعٍ [52:8]

(8) Of it there is no preventer.

### الآية 52:9

> يَوْمَ تَمُورُ السَّمَاءُ مَوْرًا [52:9]

(9) On the Day the heaven will sway with circular motion

### الآية 52:10

> وَتَسِيرُ الْجِبَالُ سَيْرًا [52:10]

(10) And the mountains will pass on, departing\[1553\] -
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1553\]- Becoming dust and moving as clouds.

### الآية 52:11

> فَوَيْلٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ لِلْمُكَذِّبِينَ [52:11]

(11) Then woe, that Day, to the deniers,

### الآية 52:12

> الَّذِينَ هُمْ فِي خَوْضٍ يَلْعَبُونَ [52:12]

(12) Who are in \[empty\] discourse amusing themselves.

### الآية 52:13

> يَوْمَ يُدَعُّونَ إِلَىٰ نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ دَعًّا [52:13]

(13) The Day they are thrust toward the fire of Hell with a \[violent\] thrust, \[its angels will say\],

### الآية 52:14

> هَٰذِهِ النَّارُ الَّتِي كُنْتُمْ بِهَا تُكَذِّبُونَ [52:14]

(14) "This is the Fire which you used to deny.

### الآية 52:15

> أَفَسِحْرٌ هَٰذَا أَمْ أَنْتُمْ لَا تُبْصِرُونَ [52:15]

(15) Then is this magic, or do you not see?

### الآية 52:16

> اصْلَوْهَا فَاصْبِرُوا أَوْ لَا تَصْبِرُوا سَوَاءٌ عَلَيْكُمْ ۖ إِنَّمَا تُجْزَوْنَ مَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ [52:16]

(16) \[Enter to\] burn therein; then be patient or impatient - it is all the same for you. You are only being recompensed \[for\] what you used to do."

### الآية 52:17

> إِنَّ الْمُتَّقِينَ فِي جَنَّاتٍ وَنَعِيمٍ [52:17]

(17) Indeed, the righteous will be in gardens and pleasure,

### الآية 52:18

> فَاكِهِينَ بِمَا آتَاهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ وَوَقَاهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ عَذَابَ الْجَحِيمِ [52:18]

(18) Enjoying what their Lord has given them, and their Lord protected them from the punishment of Hellfire.

### الآية 52:19

> كُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا هَنِيئًا بِمَا كُنْتُمْ تَعْمَلُونَ [52:19]

(19) \[They will be told\], "Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you used to do."

### الآية 52:20

> مُتَّكِئِينَ عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مَصْفُوفَةٍ ۖ وَزَوَّجْنَاهُمْ بِحُورٍ عِينٍ [52:20]

(20) They will be reclining on thrones lined up, and We will marry them to fair women with large, \[beautiful\] eyes.

### الآية 52:21

> وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَاتَّبَعَتْهُمْ ذُرِّيَّتُهُمْ بِإِيمَانٍ أَلْحَقْنَا بِهِمْ ذُرِّيَّتَهُمْ وَمَا أَلَتْنَاهُمْ مِنْ عَمَلِهِمْ مِنْ شَيْءٍ ۚ كُلُّ امْرِئٍ بِمَا كَسَبَ رَهِينٌ [52:21]

(21) And those who believed and whose descendants followed them in faith - We will join with them their descendants, and We will not deprive them of anything of their deeds.\[1554\] Every person, for what he earned, is retained.\[1555\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1554\]- i.e., the reward thereof.
\[1555\]- i.e., subject or held responsible. Literally, "a hostage."

### الآية 52:22

> وَأَمْدَدْنَاهُمْ بِفَاكِهَةٍ وَلَحْمٍ مِمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ [52:22]

(22) And We will provide them with fruit and meat from whatever they desire.

### الآية 52:23

> يَتَنَازَعُونَ فِيهَا كَأْسًا لَا لَغْوٌ فِيهَا وَلَا تَأْثِيمٌ [52:23]

(23) They will exchange with one another a cup \[of wine\] wherein \[results\] no ill speech or commission of sin.

### الآية 52:24

> ۞ وَيَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ غِلْمَانٌ لَهُمْ كَأَنَّهُمْ لُؤْلُؤٌ مَكْنُونٌ [52:24]

(24) There will circulate among them \[servant\] boys \[especially\] for them, as if they were pearls well-protected.

### الآية 52:25

> وَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ [52:25]

(25) And they will approach one another, inquiring of each other.

### الآية 52:26

> قَالُوا إِنَّا كُنَّا قَبْلُ فِي أَهْلِنَا مُشْفِقِينَ [52:26]

(26) They will say, "Indeed, we were previously among our people fearful \[of displeasing Allāh\].

### الآية 52:27

> فَمَنَّ اللَّهُ عَلَيْنَا وَوَقَانَا عَذَابَ السَّمُومِ [52:27]

(27) So Allāh conferred favor upon us and protected us from the punishment of the Scorching Fire.

### الآية 52:28

> إِنَّا كُنَّا مِنْ قَبْلُ نَدْعُوهُ ۖ إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْبَرُّ الرَّحِيمُ [52:28]

(28) Indeed, we used to supplicate\[1556\] Him before. Indeed, it is He who is the Beneficent, the Merciful."
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1556\]- i.e., worship.

### الآية 52:29

> فَذَكِّرْ فَمَا أَنْتَ بِنِعْمَتِ رَبِّكَ بِكَاهِنٍ وَلَا مَجْنُونٍ [52:29]

(29) So remind, \[O Muḥammad\], for you are not, by the favor of your Lord, a soothsayer or a madman.

### الآية 52:30

> أَمْ يَقُولُونَ شَاعِرٌ نَتَرَبَّصُ بِهِ رَيْبَ الْمَنُونِ [52:30]

(30) Or do they say \[of you\], "A poet for whom we await a misfortune of time"?\[1557\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1557\]- i.e., some accident or inevitable death.

### الآية 52:31

> قُلْ تَرَبَّصُوا فَإِنِّي مَعَكُمْ مِنَ الْمُتَرَبِّصِينَ [52:31]

(31) Say, "Wait, for indeed I am, with you, among the waiters."

### الآية 52:32

> أَمْ تَأْمُرُهُمْ أَحْلَامُهُمْ بِهَٰذَا ۚ أَمْ هُمْ قَوْمٌ طَاغُونَ [52:32]

(32) Or do their minds\[1558\] command them to \[say\] this, or are they a transgressing people?
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1558\]- In this expression is also a subtle allusion to the leaders of the Quraysh, who considered themselves to be great minds.

### الآية 52:33

> أَمْ يَقُولُونَ تَقَوَّلَهُ ۚ بَلْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ [52:33]

(33) Or do they say, "He has made it up"? Rather, they do not believe.

### الآية 52:34

> فَلْيَأْتُوا بِحَدِيثٍ مِثْلِهِ إِنْ كَانُوا صَادِقِينَ [52:34]

(34) Then let them produce a statement like it, if they should be truthful.

### الآية 52:35

> أَمْ خُلِقُوا مِنْ غَيْرِ شَيْءٍ أَمْ هُمُ الْخَالِقُونَ [52:35]

(35) Or were they created by nothing, or were they the creators \[of themselves\]?

### الآية 52:36

> أَمْ خَلَقُوا السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضَ ۚ بَلْ لَا يُوقِنُونَ [52:36]

(36) Or did they create the heavens and the earth? Rather, they are not certain.

### الآية 52:37

> أَمْ عِنْدَهُمْ خَزَائِنُ رَبِّكَ أَمْ هُمُ الْمُصَيْطِرُونَ [52:37]

(37) Or have they the depositories \[containing the provision\] of your Lord? Or are they the controllers \[of them\]?

### الآية 52:38

> أَمْ لَهُمْ سُلَّمٌ يَسْتَمِعُونَ فِيهِ ۖ فَلْيَأْتِ مُسْتَمِعُهُمْ بِسُلْطَانٍ مُبِينٍ [52:38]

(38) Or have they a stairway \[into the heaven\] upon which they listen? Then let their listener produce a clear authority \[i.e., proof\].

### الآية 52:39

> أَمْ لَهُ الْبَنَاتُ وَلَكُمُ الْبَنُونَ [52:39]

(39) Or has He daughters while you have sons?

### الآية 52:40

> أَمْ تَسْأَلُهُمْ أَجْرًا فَهُمْ مِنْ مَغْرَمٍ مُثْقَلُونَ [52:40]

(40) Or do you, \[O Muḥammad\], ask of them a payment, so they are by debt burdened down?

### الآية 52:41

> أَمْ عِنْدَهُمُ الْغَيْبُ فَهُمْ يَكْتُبُونَ [52:41]

(41) Or have they \[knowledge of\] the unseen, so they write \[it\] down?

### الآية 52:42

> أَمْ يُرِيدُونَ كَيْدًا ۖ فَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا هُمُ الْمَكِيدُونَ [52:42]

(42) Or do they intend a plan? But those who disbelieve - they are the object of a plan.

### الآية 52:43

> أَمْ لَهُمْ إِلَٰهٌ غَيْرُ اللَّهِ ۚ سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ [52:43]

(43) Or have they a deity other than Allāh? Exalted is Allāh above whatever they associate with Him.

### الآية 52:44

> وَإِنْ يَرَوْا كِسْفًا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ سَاقِطًا يَقُولُوا سَحَابٌ مَرْكُومٌ [52:44]

(44) And if they were to see a fragment from the sky falling,\[1559\] they would say, "\[It is merely\] clouds heaped up."
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1559\]- Marking the onset of Allāh's punishment, as they had requested.

### الآية 52:45

> فَذَرْهُمْ حَتَّىٰ يُلَاقُوا يَوْمَهُمُ الَّذِي فِيهِ يُصْعَقُونَ [52:45]

(45) So leave them until they meet their Day in which they will be struck insensible -

### الآية 52:46

> يَوْمَ لَا يُغْنِي عَنْهُمْ كَيْدُهُمْ شَيْئًا وَلَا هُمْ يُنْصَرُونَ [52:46]

(46) The Day their plan will not avail them at all, nor will they be helped.

### الآية 52:47

> وَإِنَّ لِلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا عَذَابًا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ [52:47]

(47) And indeed, for those who have wronged is a punishment\[1560\] before that, but most of them do not know.
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1560\]- If not in this world, in the grave.

### الآية 52:48

> وَاصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ فَإِنَّكَ بِأَعْيُنِنَا ۖ وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ حِينَ تَقُومُ [52:48]

(48) And be patient, \[O Muḥammad\], for the decision of your Lord, for indeed, you are in Our eyes \[i.e., sight\]. And exalt \[Allāh\] with praise of your Lord when you arise

### الآية 52:49

> وَمِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَسَبِّحْهُ وَإِدْبَارَ النُّجُومِ [52:49]

(49) And in a part of the night exalt Him and after \[the setting of\] the stars.
