### الآية 56:1

> إِذَا وَقَعَتِ الْوَاقِعَةُ [56:1]

(1) When the Occurrence occurs,

### الآية 56:2

> لَيْسَ لِوَقْعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ [56:2]

(2) There is, at its occurrence, no denial.

### الآية 56:3

> خَافِضَةٌ رَافِعَةٌ [56:3]

(3) It will bring down \[some\] and raise up \[others\].\[1608\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1608\]- According to their deeds rather than wealth and social position, as is the case in this world.

### الآية 56:4

> إِذَا رُجَّتِ الْأَرْضُ رَجًّا [56:4]

(4) When the earth is shaken with convulsion

### الآية 56:5

> وَبُسَّتِ الْجِبَالُ بَسًّا [56:5]

(5) And the mountains are broken down, crumbling

### الآية 56:6

> فَكَانَتْ هَبَاءً مُنْبَثًّا [56:6]

(6) And become dust dispersing,

### الآية 56:7

> وَكُنْتُمْ أَزْوَاجًا ثَلَاثَةً [56:7]

**(7) And you become \[of\] three kinds:**

### الآية 56:8

> فَأَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ [56:8]

(8) Then the companions of the right - what are the companions of the right?\[1609\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1609\]- i.e., those given their records in their right hand and who are destined for Paradise.

### الآية 56:9

> وَأَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ [56:9]

(9) And the companions of the left - what are companions of the left?\[1610\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1610\]- i.e., those given their records in their left hand and who are destined for Hell.

### الآية 56:10

> وَالسَّابِقُونَ السَّابِقُونَ [56:10]

(10) And the forerunners, the forerunners\[1611\] -
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1611\]- The words can also be understood as a complete sentence, i.e., "The forerunners \[in good deeds\] are the forerunners \[in entering Paradise\]."

### الآية 56:11

> أُولَٰئِكَ الْمُقَرَّبُونَ [56:11]

(11) Those are the ones brought near \[to Allāh\]

### الآية 56:12

> فِي جَنَّاتِ النَّعِيمِ [56:12]

(12) In the Gardens of Pleasure,

### الآية 56:13

> ثُلَّةٌ مِنَ الْأَوَّلِينَ [56:13]

(13) A \[large\] company of the former peoples

### الآية 56:14

> وَقَلِيلٌ مِنَ الْآخِرِينَ [56:14]

(14) And a few of the later peoples,

### الآية 56:15

> عَلَىٰ سُرُرٍ مَوْضُونَةٍ [56:15]

(15) On thrones woven \[with ornament\],

### الآية 56:16

> مُتَّكِئِينَ عَلَيْهَا مُتَقَابِلِينَ [56:16]

(16) Reclining on them, facing each other.

### الآية 56:17

> يَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَانٌ مُخَلَّدُونَ [56:17]

(17) There will circulate among them young boys made eternal.

### الآية 56:18

> بِأَكْوَابٍ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأْسٍ مِنْ مَعِينٍ [56:18]

(18) With vessels, pitchers and a cup \[of wine\] from a flowing spring -

### الآية 56:19

> لَا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنْهَا وَلَا يُنْزِفُونَ [56:19]

(19) No headache will they have therefrom, nor will they be intoxicated -

### الآية 56:20

> وَفَاكِهَةٍ مِمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ [56:20]

(20) And fruit of what they select

### الآية 56:21

> وَلَحْمِ طَيْرٍ مِمَّا يَشْتَهُونَ [56:21]

(21) And the meat of fowl, from whatever they desire.

### الآية 56:22

> وَحُورٌ عِينٌ [56:22]

(22) And \[for them are\] fair women with large, \[beautiful\] eyes,

### الآية 56:23

> كَأَمْثَالِ اللُّؤْلُؤِ الْمَكْنُونِ [56:23]

(23) The likenesses of pearls well-protected,

### الآية 56:24

> جَزَاءً بِمَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ [56:24]

(24) As reward for what they used to do.

### الآية 56:25

> لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا تَأْثِيمًا [56:25]

(25) They will not hear therein ill speech or commission of sin -

### الآية 56:26

> إِلَّا قِيلًا سَلَامًا سَلَامًا [56:26]

(26) Only a saying \[of\] peace, peace.

### الآية 56:27

> وَأَصْحَابُ الْيَمِينِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الْيَمِينِ [56:27]

(27) The companions of the right - what are the companions of the right?

### الآية 56:28

> فِي سِدْرٍ مَخْضُودٍ [56:28]

(28) \[They will be\] among lote trees with thorns removed.

### الآية 56:29

> وَطَلْحٍ مَنْضُودٍ [56:29]

(29) And \[banana\] trees layered \[with fruit\].

### الآية 56:30

> وَظِلٍّ مَمْدُودٍ [56:30]

(30) And shade extended.

### الآية 56:31

> وَمَاءٍ مَسْكُوبٍ [56:31]

(31) And water poured out

### الآية 56:32

> وَفَاكِهَةٍ كَثِيرَةٍ [56:32]

(32) And fruit, abundant \[and varied\],

### الآية 56:33

> لَا مَقْطُوعَةٍ وَلَا مَمْنُوعَةٍ [56:33]

(33) Neither limited \[to season\] nor forbidden,

### الآية 56:34

> وَفُرُشٍ مَرْفُوعَةٍ [56:34]

(34) And \[upon\] beds raised high.

### الآية 56:35

> إِنَّا أَنْشَأْنَاهُنَّ إِنْشَاءً [56:35]

(35) Indeed, We have produced them \[i.e., the women of Paradise\] in a \[new\] creation

### الآية 56:36

> فَجَعَلْنَاهُنَّ أَبْكَارًا [56:36]

(36) And made them virgins,

### الآية 56:37

> عُرُبًا أَتْرَابًا [56:37]

(37) Devoted \[to their husbands\] and of equal age,

### الآية 56:38

> لِأَصْحَابِ الْيَمِينِ [56:38]

(38) For the companions of the right \[who are\]

### الآية 56:39

> ثُلَّةٌ مِنَ الْأَوَّلِينَ [56:39]

(39) A company of the former peoples

### الآية 56:40

> وَثُلَّةٌ مِنَ الْآخِرِينَ [56:40]

(40) And a company of the later peoples.

### الآية 56:41

> وَأَصْحَابُ الشِّمَالِ مَا أَصْحَابُ الشِّمَالِ [56:41]

(41) And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left?

### الآية 56:42

> فِي سَمُومٍ وَحَمِيمٍ [56:42]

(42) \[They will be\] in scorching fire and scalding water

### الآية 56:43

> وَظِلٍّ مِنْ يَحْمُومٍ [56:43]

(43) And a shade of black smoke,

### الآية 56:44

> لَا بَارِدٍ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ [56:44]

(44) Neither cool nor beneficial.

### الآية 56:45

> إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا قَبْلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتْرَفِينَ [56:45]

(45) Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence,

### الآية 56:46

> وَكَانُوا يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى الْحِنْثِ الْعَظِيمِ [56:46]

(46) And they used to persist in the great violation,\[1612\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1612\]- i.e., shirk (association with Allāh) or disbelief.

### الآية 56:47

> وَكَانُوا يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابًا وَعِظَامًا أَإِنَّا لَمَبْعُوثُونَ [56:47]

(47) And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected?

### الآية 56:48

> أَوَآبَاؤُنَا الْأَوَّلُونَ [56:48]

(48) And our forefathers \[as well\]?"

### الآية 56:49

> قُلْ إِنَّ الْأَوَّلِينَ وَالْآخِرِينَ [56:49]

(49) Say, \[O Muḥammad\], "Indeed, the former and later peoples

### الآية 56:50

> لَمَجْمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَاتِ يَوْمٍ مَعْلُومٍ [56:50]

(50) Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day."

### الآية 56:51

> ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمْ أَيُّهَا الضَّالُّونَ الْمُكَذِّبُونَ [56:51]

(51) Then indeed you, O those astray \[who are\] deniers,

### الآية 56:52

> لَآكِلُونَ مِنْ شَجَرٍ مِنْ زَقُّومٍ [56:52]

(52) Will be eating from trees of zaqqūm

### الآية 56:53

> فَمَالِئُونَ مِنْهَا الْبُطُونَ [56:53]

(53) And filling with it your bellies

### الآية 56:54

> فَشَارِبُونَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْحَمِيمِ [56:54]

(54) And drinking on top of it from scalding water.

### الآية 56:55

> فَشَارِبُونَ شُرْبَ الْهِيمِ [56:55]

(55) And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels.

### الآية 56:56

> هَٰذَا نُزُلُهُمْ يَوْمَ الدِّينِ [56:56]

(56) That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense.

### الآية 56:57

> نَحْنُ خَلَقْنَاكُمْ فَلَوْلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ [56:57]

(57) We have created you, so why do you not believe?

### الآية 56:58

> أَفَرَأَيْتُمْ مَا تُمْنُونَ [56:58]

(58) Have you seen that which you emit?\[1613\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1613\]- i.e., semen, which contains the potential for human life.

### الآية 56:59

> أَأَنْتُمْ تَخْلُقُونَهُ أَمْ نَحْنُ الْخَالِقُونَ [56:59]

(59) Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator?

### الآية 56:60

> نَحْنُ قَدَّرْنَا بَيْنَكُمُ الْمَوْتَ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِينَ [56:60]

(60) We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone

### الآية 56:61

> عَلَىٰ أَنْ نُبَدِّلَ أَمْثَالَكُمْ وَنُنْشِئَكُمْ فِي مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ [56:61]

(61) In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that \[form\] which you do not know.\[1614\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1614\]- An alternative meaning has also been given: "...in that We will replace the likes of you \[with others upon the earth\] and create you \[in the Hereafter\] in that which you do not know."

### الآية 56:62

> وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ النَّشْأَةَ الْأُولَىٰ فَلَوْلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ [56:62]

(62) And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember?

### الآية 56:63

> أَفَرَأَيْتُمْ مَا تَحْرُثُونَ [56:63]

(63) And have you seen that \[seed\] which you sow?

### الآية 56:64

> أَأَنْتُمْ تَزْرَعُونَهُ أَمْ نَحْنُ الزَّارِعُونَ [56:64]

(64) Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower?

### الآية 56:65

> لَوْ نَشَاءُ لَجَعَلْنَاهُ حُطَامًا فَظَلْتُمْ تَفَكَّهُونَ [56:65]

(65) If We willed, We could make it \[dry\] debris, and you would remain in wonder,\[1615\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1615\]- At what had happened or remain in a state of shock. Another meaning is "in regret".

### الآية 56:66

> إِنَّا لَمُغْرَمُونَ [56:66]

(66) \[Saying\], "Indeed, we are \[now\] in debt;

### الآية 56:67

> بَلْ نَحْنُ مَحْرُومُونَ [56:67]

(67) Rather, we have been deprived."

### الآية 56:68

> أَفَرَأَيْتُمُ الْمَاءَ الَّذِي تَشْرَبُونَ [56:68]

(68) And have you seen the water that you drink?

### الآية 56:69

> أَأَنْتُمْ أَنْزَلْتُمُوهُ مِنَ الْمُزْنِ أَمْ نَحْنُ الْمُنْزِلُونَ [56:69]

(69) Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down?

### الآية 56:70

> لَوْ نَشَاءُ جَعَلْنَاهُ أُجَاجًا فَلَوْلَا تَشْكُرُونَ [56:70]

(70) If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful?

### الآية 56:71

> أَفَرَأَيْتُمُ النَّارَ الَّتِي تُورُونَ [56:71]

(71) And have you seen the fire that you ignite?

### الآية 56:72

> أَأَنْتُمْ أَنْشَأْتُمْ شَجَرَتَهَا أَمْ نَحْنُ الْمُنْشِئُونَ [56:72]

(72) Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer?

### الآية 56:73

> نَحْنُ جَعَلْنَاهَا تَذْكِرَةً وَمَتَاعًا لِلْمُقْوِينَ [56:73]

(73) We have made it a reminder\[1616\] and provision for the travelers,\[1617\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1616\]- Of the great fire of Hell.
\[1617\]- In the form of flints or other means by which to ignite fire. Travelers are mentioned because of the special convenience to them, although it is a provision for all people in general.

### الآية 56:74

> فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْعَظِيمِ [56:74]

(74) So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.

### الآية 56:75

> ۞ فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِمَوَاقِعِ النُّجُومِ [56:75]

(75) Then I swear by the setting of the stars,\[1618\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1618\]- Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā) confirms absolutely by oath.

### الآية 56:76

> وَإِنَّهُ لَقَسَمٌ لَوْ تَعْلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ [56:76]

(76) And indeed, it is an oath - if you could know - \[most\] great.

### الآية 56:77

> إِنَّهُ لَقُرْآنٌ كَرِيمٌ [56:77]

(77) Indeed, it is a noble Qur’ān.

### الآية 56:78

> فِي كِتَابٍ مَكْنُونٍ [56:78]

(78) In a Register well-protected;\[1619\].
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1619\]- The Preserved Slate (al-Lawḥ al-Maḥfūẓ), which is with Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā).

### الآية 56:79

> لَا يَمَسُّهُ إِلَّا الْمُطَهَّرُونَ [56:79]

(79) None touch it except the purified \[i.e., the angels\].

### الآية 56:80

> تَنْزِيلٌ مِنْ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ [56:80]

(80) \[It is\] a revelation from the Lord of the worlds.

### الآية 56:81

> أَفَبِهَٰذَا الْحَدِيثِ أَنْتُمْ مُدْهِنُونَ [56:81]

(81) Then is it to this statement that you are indifferent

### الآية 56:82

> وَتَجْعَلُونَ رِزْقَكُمْ أَنَّكُمْ تُكَذِّبُونَ [56:82]

(82) And make \[the thanks for\] your provision that you deny \[the Provider\]?

### الآية 56:83

> فَلَوْلَا إِذَا بَلَغَتِ الْحُلْقُومَ [56:83]

(83) Then why, when it \[i.e., the soul at death\] reaches the throat

### الآية 56:84

> وَأَنْتُمْ حِينَئِذٍ تَنْظُرُونَ [56:84]

(84) And you are at that time looking on -

### الآية 56:85

> وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنْكُمْ وَلَٰكِنْ لَا تُبْصِرُونَ [56:85]

(85) And We \[i.e., Our angels\] are nearer to him than you, but you do not see -

### الآية 56:86

> فَلَوْلَا إِنْ كُنْتُمْ غَيْرَ مَدِينِينَ [56:86]

(86) Then why do you not, if you are not to be recompensed,

### الآية 56:87

> تَرْجِعُونَهَا إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ [56:87]

(87) Bring it back,\[1620\] if you should be truthful?
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1620\]- i.e., return the soul to the body, meaning that just as you cannot prevent death when it is decreed, you will not escape the recompense when it is decreed.

### الآية 56:88

> فَأَمَّا إِنْ كَانَ مِنَ الْمُقَرَّبِينَ [56:88]

(88) And if he \[i.e., the deceased\] was of those brought near \[to Allāh\],

### الآية 56:89

> فَرَوْحٌ وَرَيْحَانٌ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمٍ [56:89]

(89) Then \[for him is\] rest and bounty and a garden of pleasure.

### الآية 56:90

> وَأَمَّا إِنْ كَانَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ الْيَمِينِ [56:90]

(90) And if he was of the companions of the right,

### الآية 56:91

> فَسَلَامٌ لَكَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ الْيَمِينِ [56:91]

(91) Then \[the angels will say\], "Peace for you; \[you are\] from the companions of the right."

### الآية 56:92

> وَأَمَّا إِنْ كَانَ مِنَ الْمُكَذِّبِينَ الضَّالِّينَ [56:92]

(92) But if he was of the deniers \[who were\] astray,

### الآية 56:93

> فَنُزُلٌ مِنْ حَمِيمٍ [56:93]

(93) Then \[for him is\] accommodation of scalding water

### الآية 56:94

> وَتَصْلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ [56:94]

(94) And burning in Hellfire.

### الآية 56:95

> إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ الْيَقِينِ [56:95]

(95) Indeed, this is the true certainty,

### الآية 56:96

> فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْعَظِيمِ [56:96]

(96) So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.
