### الآية 69:1

> الْحَاقَّةُ [69:1]

(1) The Inevitable Reality -

### الآية 69:2

> مَا الْحَاقَّةُ [69:2]

(2) What is the Inevitable Reality?

### الآية 69:3

> وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْحَاقَّةُ [69:3]

(3) And what can make you know what is the Inevitable Reality?

### الآية 69:4

> كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ وَعَادٌ بِالْقَارِعَةِ [69:4]

(4) Thamūd and ʿAad denied the Striking Calamity \[i.e., the Resurrection\].

### الآية 69:5

> فَأَمَّا ثَمُودُ فَأُهْلِكُوا بِالطَّاغِيَةِ [69:5]

(5) So as for Thamūd, they were destroyed by the overpowering \[blast\].

### الآية 69:6

> وَأَمَّا عَادٌ فَأُهْلِكُوا بِرِيحٍ صَرْصَرٍ عَاتِيَةٍ [69:6]

(6) And as for ʿAad, they were destroyed by a screaming,\[1737\] violent wind

\[1737\]- Or "cold."

### الآية 69:7

> سَخَّرَهَا عَلَيْهِمْ سَبْعَ لَيَالٍ وَثَمَانِيَةَ أَيَّامٍ حُسُومًا فَتَرَى الْقَوْمَ فِيهَا صَرْعَىٰ كَأَنَّهُمْ أَعْجَازُ نَخْلٍ خَاوِيَةٍ [69:7]

(7) Which He \[i.e., Allāh\] imposed upon them for seven nights and eight days in succession, so you would see the people therein fallen as if they were hollow trunks of palm trees.

### الآية 69:8

> فَهَلْ تَرَىٰ لَهُمْ مِنْ بَاقِيَةٍ [69:8]

(8) Then do you see of them any remains?

### الآية 69:9

> وَجَاءَ فِرْعَوْنُ وَمَنْ قَبْلَهُ وَالْمُؤْتَفِكَاتُ بِالْخَاطِئَةِ [69:9]

(9) And there came Pharaoh and those before him and the overturned cities\[1738\] with sin.
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1738\]- Those to which Lot was sent (see 11:82-83) or generally, all cities which were destroyed due to their denial of a messenger from Allāh.

### الآية 69:10

> فَعَصَوْا رَسُولَ رَبِّهِمْ فَأَخَذَهُمْ أَخْذَةً رَابِيَةً [69:10]

(10) And they disobeyed the messenger of their Lord, so He seized them with a seizure exceeding \[in severity\].

### الآية 69:11

> إِنَّا لَمَّا طَغَى الْمَاءُ حَمَلْنَاكُمْ فِي الْجَارِيَةِ [69:11]

(11) Indeed, when the water overflowed, We carried you \[i.e., your ancestors\] in the sailing ship\[1739\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1739\]- Which was constructed by Noah.

### الآية 69:12

> لِنَجْعَلَهَا لَكُمْ تَذْكِرَةً وَتَعِيَهَا أُذُنٌ وَاعِيَةٌ [69:12]

(12) That We might make it for you a reminder and \[that\] a conscious ear would be conscious of it.

### الآية 69:13

> فَإِذَا نُفِخَ فِي الصُّورِ نَفْخَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ [69:13]

(13) Then when the Horn is blown with one blast

### الآية 69:14

> وَحُمِلَتِ الْأَرْضُ وَالْجِبَالُ فَدُكَّتَا دَكَّةً وَاحِدَةً [69:14]

(14) And the earth and the mountains are lifted and leveled with one blow \[i.e., stroke\] -

### الآية 69:15

> فَيَوْمَئِذٍ وَقَعَتِ الْوَاقِعَةُ [69:15]

(15) Then on that Day, the Occurrence \[i.e., Resurrection\] will occur,

### الآية 69:16

> وَانْشَقَّتِ السَّمَاءُ فَهِيَ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَاهِيَةٌ [69:16]

(16) And the heaven will split \[open\], for that Day it is infirm.\[1740\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1740\]- i.e., weak, enfeebled and unstable.

### الآية 69:17

> وَالْمَلَكُ عَلَىٰ أَرْجَائِهَا ۚ وَيَحْمِلُ عَرْشَ رَبِّكَ فَوْقَهُمْ يَوْمَئِذٍ ثَمَانِيَةٌ [69:17]

(17) And the angels are at its edges. And there will bear the Throne of your Lord above them, that Day, eight \[of them\].

### الآية 69:18

> يَوْمَئِذٍ تُعْرَضُونَ لَا تَخْفَىٰ مِنْكُمْ خَافِيَةٌ [69:18]

(18) That Day, you will be exhibited \[for judgement\]; not hidden among you is anything concealed.\[1741\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1741\]- i.e., any person or any secret you might attempt to conceal.

### الآية 69:19

> فَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِيَ كِتَابَهُ بِيَمِينِهِ فَيَقُولُ هَاؤُمُ اقْرَءُوا كِتَابِيَهْ [69:19]

(19) So as for he who is given his record in his right hand, he will say, "Here, read my record!

### الآية 69:20

> إِنِّي ظَنَنْتُ أَنِّي مُلَاقٍ حِسَابِيَهْ [69:20]

(20) Indeed, I was certain that I would be meeting my account."

### الآية 69:21

> فَهُوَ فِي عِيشَةٍ رَاضِيَةٍ [69:21]

(21) So he will be in a pleasant life -

### الآية 69:22

> فِي جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍ [69:22]

(22) In an elevated garden,

### الآية 69:23

> قُطُوفُهَا دَانِيَةٌ [69:23]

(23) Its \[fruit\] to be picked hanging near.

### الآية 69:24

> كُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا هَنِيئًا بِمَا أَسْلَفْتُمْ فِي الْأَيَّامِ الْخَالِيَةِ [69:24]

(24) \[They will be told\], "Eat and drink in satisfaction for what you put forth\[1742\] in the days past."
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1742\]- Literally, "advanced" in anticipation of reward in the Hereafter.

### الآية 69:25

> وَأَمَّا مَنْ أُوتِيَ كِتَابَهُ بِشِمَالِهِ فَيَقُولُ يَا لَيْتَنِي لَمْ أُوتَ كِتَابِيَهْ [69:25]

(25) But as for he who is given his record in his left hand, he will say, "Oh, I wish I had not been given my record

### الآية 69:26

> وَلَمْ أَدْرِ مَا حِسَابِيَهْ [69:26]

(26) And had not known what is my account.

### الآية 69:27

> يَا لَيْتَهَا كَانَتِ الْقَاضِيَةَ [69:27]

(27) I wish it \[i.e., my death\] had been the decisive one.\[1743\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1743\]- i.e., ending life rather than being the gateway to eternal life.

### الآية 69:28

> مَا أَغْنَىٰ عَنِّي مَالِيَهْ ۜ [69:28]

(28) My wealth has not availed me.

### الآية 69:29

> هَلَكَ عَنِّي سُلْطَانِيَهْ [69:29]

(29) Gone from me is my authority."\[1744\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1744\]- i.e., I have no valid excuse to stand on.

### الآية 69:30

> خُذُوهُ فَغُلُّوهُ [69:30]

(30) \[Allāh will say\], "Seize him and shackle him.

### الآية 69:31

> ثُمَّ الْجَحِيمَ صَلُّوهُ [69:31]

(31) Then into Hellfire drive him.

### الآية 69:32

> ثُمَّ فِي سِلْسِلَةٍ ذَرْعُهَا سَبْعُونَ ذِرَاعًا فَاسْلُكُوهُ [69:32]

(32) Then into a chain whose length is seventy cubits insert him."

### الآية 69:33

> إِنَّهُ كَانَ لَا يُؤْمِنُ بِاللَّهِ الْعَظِيمِ [69:33]

(33) Indeed, he did not used to believe in Allāh, the Most Great,

### الآية 69:34

> وَلَا يَحُضُّ عَلَىٰ طَعَامِ الْمِسْكِينِ [69:34]

(34) Nor did he encourage the feeding of the poor.

### الآية 69:35

> فَلَيْسَ لَهُ الْيَوْمَ هَاهُنَا حَمِيمٌ [69:35]

(35) So there is not for him here this Day any devoted friend

### الآية 69:36

> وَلَا طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِنْ غِسْلِينٍ [69:36]

(36) Nor any food except from the discharge of wounds;

### الآية 69:37

> لَا يَأْكُلُهُ إِلَّا الْخَاطِئُونَ [69:37]

(37) None will eat it except the sinners.

### الآية 69:38

> فَلَا أُقْسِمُ بِمَا تُبْصِرُونَ [69:38]

(38) So I swear by what you see

### الآية 69:39

> وَمَا لَا تُبْصِرُونَ [69:39]

(39) And what you do not see

### الآية 69:40

> إِنَّهُ لَقَوْلُ رَسُولٍ كَرِيمٍ [69:40]

(40) \[That\] indeed, it \[i.e., the Qur’ān\] is the word of a noble Messenger.

### الآية 69:41

> وَمَا هُوَ بِقَوْلِ شَاعِرٍ ۚ قَلِيلًا مَا تُؤْمِنُونَ [69:41]

(41) And it is not the word of a poet; little do you believe.

### الآية 69:42

> وَلَا بِقَوْلِ كَاهِنٍ ۚ قَلِيلًا مَا تَذَكَّرُونَ [69:42]

(42) Nor the word of a soothsayer; little do you remember.

### الآية 69:43

> تَنْزِيلٌ مِنْ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ [69:43]

(43) \[It is\] a revelation from the Lord of the worlds.

### الآية 69:44

> وَلَوْ تَقَوَّلَ عَلَيْنَا بَعْضَ الْأَقَاوِيلِ [69:44]

(44) And if he \[i.e., Muḥammad\] had made up about Us some \[false\] sayings,

### الآية 69:45

> لَأَخَذْنَا مِنْهُ بِالْيَمِينِ [69:45]

(45) We would have seized him by the right hand;\[1745\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1745\]- Another interpretation is "by \[Our\] right hand," i.e., Allāh would have exacted revenge with might and power.

### الآية 69:46

> ثُمَّ لَقَطَعْنَا مِنْهُ الْوَتِينَ [69:46]

(46) Then We would have cut from him the aorta.\[1746\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1746\]- Causing immediate death.

### الآية 69:47

> فَمَا مِنْكُمْ مِنْ أَحَدٍ عَنْهُ حَاجِزِينَ [69:47]

(47) And there is no one of you who could prevent \[Us\] from him.

### الآية 69:48

> وَإِنَّهُ لَتَذْكِرَةٌ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ [69:48]

(48) And indeed, it \[i.e., the Qur’ān\] is a reminder for the righteous.

### الآية 69:49

> وَإِنَّا لَنَعْلَمُ أَنَّ مِنْكُمْ مُكَذِّبِينَ [69:49]

(49) And indeed, We know that among you are deniers.

### الآية 69:50

> وَإِنَّهُ لَحَسْرَةٌ عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ [69:50]

(50) And indeed, it will be \[a cause of\] regret upon the disbelievers.

### الآية 69:51

> وَإِنَّهُ لَحَقُّ الْيَقِينِ [69:51]

(51) And indeed, it is the truth of certainty.

### الآية 69:52

> فَسَبِّحْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الْعَظِيمِ [69:52]

(52) So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great.
