### الآية 72:1

> قُلْ أُوحِيَ إِلَيَّ أَنَّهُ اسْتَمَعَ نَفَرٌ مِنَ الْجِنِّ فَقَالُوا إِنَّا سَمِعْنَا قُرْآنًا عَجَبًا [72:1]

(1) Say, \[O Muḥammad\], "It has been revealed to me that a group of the jinn listened and said, 'Indeed, we have heard an amazing Qur’ān \[i.e., recitation\].

### الآية 72:2

> يَهْدِي إِلَى الرُّشْدِ فَآمَنَّا بِهِ ۖ وَلَنْ نُشْرِكَ بِرَبِّنَا أَحَدًا [72:2]

(2) It guides to the right course, and we have believed in it. And we will never associate with our Lord anyone.

### الآية 72:3

> وَأَنَّهُ تَعَالَىٰ جَدُّ رَبِّنَا مَا اتَّخَذَ صَاحِبَةً وَلَا وَلَدًا [72:3]

(3) And \[it teaches\] that exalted is the nobleness of our Lord; He has not taken a wife or a son

### الآية 72:4

> وَأَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ سَفِيهُنَا عَلَى اللَّهِ شَطَطًا [72:4]

(4) And that our foolish one \[i.e., Iblees\]\[1766\] has been saying about Allāh an excessive transgression.

\[1766\]- A plural form may also be understood, i.e., "the foolish ones among us."

### الآية 72:5

> وَأَنَّا ظَنَنَّا أَنْ لَنْ تَقُولَ الْإِنْسُ وَالْجِنُّ عَلَى اللَّهِ كَذِبًا [72:5]

(5) And we had thought that mankind and the jinn would never speak about Allāh a lie.

### الآية 72:6

> وَأَنَّهُ كَانَ رِجَالٌ مِنَ الْإِنْسِ يَعُوذُونَ بِرِجَالٍ مِنَ الْجِنِّ فَزَادُوهُمْ رَهَقًا [72:6]

(6) And there were men from mankind who sought refuge in men from the jinn, so they \[only\] increased them in burden \[i.e., sin\].

### الآية 72:7

> وَأَنَّهُمْ ظَنُّوا كَمَا ظَنَنْتُمْ أَنْ لَنْ يَبْعَثَ اللَّهُ أَحَدًا [72:7]

(7) And they had thought, as you thought, that Allāh would never send anyone \[as a messenger\].

### الآية 72:8

> وَأَنَّا لَمَسْنَا السَّمَاءَ فَوَجَدْنَاهَا مُلِئَتْ حَرَسًا شَدِيدًا وَشُهُبًا [72:8]

(8) And we have sought \[to reach\] the heaven but found it filled with powerful guards and burning flames.

### الآية 72:9

> وَأَنَّا كُنَّا نَقْعُدُ مِنْهَا مَقَاعِدَ لِلسَّمْعِ ۖ فَمَنْ يَسْتَمِعِ الْآنَ يَجِدْ لَهُ شِهَابًا رَصَدًا [72:9]

(9) And we used to sit therein in positions for hearing,\[1767\] but whoever listens now will find a burning flame lying in wait for him.
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1767\]- Before the prophethood of Muḥammad (ﷺ) the jinn used to collect information by eavesdropping on the angels and then pass it on to fortunetellers and soothsayers.

### الآية 72:10

> وَأَنَّا لَا نَدْرِي أَشَرٌّ أُرِيدَ بِمَنْ فِي الْأَرْضِ أَمْ أَرَادَ بِهِمْ رَبُّهُمْ رَشَدًا [72:10]

(10) And we do not know \[therefore\] whether evil is intended for those on earth or whether their Lord intends for them a right course.

### الآية 72:11

> وَأَنَّا مِنَّا الصَّالِحُونَ وَمِنَّا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ ۖ كُنَّا طَرَائِقَ قِدَدًا [72:11]

(11) And among us are the righteous, and among us are \[others\] not so; we were \[of\] divided ways.\[1768\]

\[1768\]- In opinion, belief and religious practice.

### الآية 72:12

> وَأَنَّا ظَنَنَّا أَنْ لَنْ نُعْجِزَ اللَّهَ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَنْ نُعْجِزَهُ هَرَبًا [72:12]

(12) And we have become certain that we will never cause failure to Allāh upon earth, nor can we escape Him by flight.

### الآية 72:13

> وَأَنَّا لَمَّا سَمِعْنَا الْهُدَىٰ آمَنَّا بِهِ ۖ فَمَنْ يُؤْمِنْ بِرَبِّهِ فَلَا يَخَافُ بَخْسًا وَلَا رَهَقًا [72:13]

(13) And when we heard the guidance \[i.e., the Qur’ān\], we believed in it. And whoever believes in his Lord will not fear deprivation or burden.\[1769\]

\[1769\]- In regard to his account in the Hereafter. Nothing of his good will be diminished, nor will the evil of another be placed upon him.

### الآية 72:14

> وَأَنَّا مِنَّا الْمُسْلِمُونَ وَمِنَّا الْقَاسِطُونَ ۖ فَمَنْ أَسْلَمَ فَأُولَٰئِكَ تَحَرَّوْا رَشَدًا [72:14]

(14) And among us are Muslims \[in submission to Allāh\], and among us are the unjust.\[1770\] And whoever has become Muslim - those have sought out the right course.

\[1770\]- i.e., those who deviate from the truth and act tyrannically.

### الآية 72:15

> وَأَمَّا الْقَاسِطُونَ فَكَانُوا لِجَهَنَّمَ حَطَبًا [72:15]

(15) But as for the unjust, they will be, for Hell, firewood.'

### الآية 72:16

> وَأَنْ لَوِ اسْتَقَامُوا عَلَى الطَّرِيقَةِ لَأَسْقَيْنَاهُمْ مَاءً غَدَقًا [72:16]

(16) And \[Allāh revealed\] that if they had remained straight on the way, We would have given them abundant rain \[i.e., provision\].

### الآية 72:17

> لِنَفْتِنَهُمْ فِيهِ ۚ وَمَنْ يُعْرِضْ عَنْ ذِكْرِ رَبِّهِ يَسْلُكْهُ عَذَابًا صَعَدًا [72:17]

(17) So We might test them therein. And whoever turns away from the remembrance of his Lord\[1771\] He will put into arduous punishment.

\[1771\]- i.e., refuses obedience to Him.

### الآية 72:18

> وَأَنَّ الْمَسَاجِدَ لِلَّهِ فَلَا تَدْعُوا مَعَ اللَّهِ أَحَدًا [72:18]

(18) And \[He revealed\] that the masjids\[1772\] are for Allāh, so do not invoke\[1773\] with Allāh anyone.
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1772\]- The term "masjid" here includes every place of worship or the earth in general.
\[1773\]- Or "worship."

### الآية 72:19

> وَأَنَّهُ لَمَّا قَامَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ يَدْعُوهُ كَادُوا يَكُونُونَ عَلَيْهِ لِبَدًا [72:19]

(19) And that when the Servant \[i.e., Prophet\] of Allāh stood up supplicating Him, they almost became about him a compacted mass."\[1774\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1774\]- Crowding on top of each other in the manner of locusts in order to hear him (ﷺ). "They" may refer to the jinn or to the disbelievers among the Arabs.

### الآية 72:20

> قُلْ إِنَّمَا أَدْعُو رَبِّي وَلَا أُشْرِكُ بِهِ أَحَدًا [72:20]

(20) Say, \[O Muḥammad\], "I only invoke my Lord and do not associate with Him anyone."

### الآية 72:21

> قُلْ إِنِّي لَا أَمْلِكُ لَكُمْ ضَرًّا وَلَا رَشَدًا [72:21]

(21) Say, "Indeed, I do not possess for you \[the power of\] harm or right direction."

### الآية 72:22

> قُلْ إِنِّي لَنْ يُجِيرَنِي مِنَ اللَّهِ أَحَدٌ وَلَنْ أَجِدَ مِنْ دُونِهِ مُلْتَحَدًا [72:22]

(22) Say, "Indeed, there will never protect me from Allāh anyone \[if I should disobey\], nor will I find in other than Him a refuge.

### الآية 72:23

> إِلَّا بَلَاغًا مِنَ اللَّهِ وَرِسَالَاتِهِ ۚ وَمَنْ يَعْصِ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ فَإِنَّ لَهُ نَارَ جَهَنَّمَ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا أَبَدًا [72:23]

(23) But \[I have for you\] only notification from Allāh, and His messages." And whoever disobeys Allāh and His Messenger - then indeed, for him is the fire of Hell; they will abide therein forever.

### الآية 72:24

> حَتَّىٰ إِذَا رَأَوْا مَا يُوعَدُونَ فَسَيَعْلَمُونَ مَنْ أَضْعَفُ نَاصِرًا وَأَقَلُّ عَدَدًا [72:24]

(24) \[The disbelievers continue\] until, when they see that which they are promised, then they will know who is weaker in helpers and less in number.

### الآية 72:25

> قُلْ إِنْ أَدْرِي أَقَرِيبٌ مَا تُوعَدُونَ أَمْ يَجْعَلُ لَهُ رَبِّي أَمَدًا [72:25]

(25) Say, "I do not know if what you are promised is near or if my Lord will grant for it a \[long\] period."

### الآية 72:26

> عَالِمُ الْغَيْبِ فَلَا يُظْهِرُ عَلَىٰ غَيْبِهِ أَحَدًا [72:26]

(26) \[He is\] Knower of the unseen, and He does not disclose His \[knowledge of the\] unseen to anyone

### الآية 72:27

> إِلَّا مَنِ ارْتَضَىٰ مِنْ رَسُولٍ فَإِنَّهُ يَسْلُكُ مِنْ بَيْنِ يَدَيْهِ وَمِنْ خَلْفِهِ رَصَدًا [72:27]

(27) Except whom He has approved of messengers, and indeed, He sends before him \[i.e., each messenger\] and behind him observers\[1775\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1775\]- Guardian angels to protect the messenger and the message.

### الآية 72:28

> لِيَعْلَمَ أَنْ قَدْ أَبْلَغُوا رِسَالَاتِ رَبِّهِمْ وَأَحَاطَ بِمَا لَدَيْهِمْ وَأَحْصَىٰ كُلَّ شَيْءٍ عَدَدًا [72:28]

(28) That he \[i.e., Muḥammad (ﷺ)\] may know\[1776\] that they have conveyed the messages of their Lord; and He has encompassed whatever is with them and has enumerated all things in number.
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1776\]- This phrase may also be read: "So He \[i.e., Allāh\] may make evident."
