### الآية 74:1

> يَا أَيُّهَا الْمُدَّثِّرُ [74:1]

(1) O you who covers himself \[with a garment\],\[1788\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1788\]- Referring to the Prophet (ﷺ).

### الآية 74:2

> قُمْ فَأَنْذِرْ [74:2]

(2) Arise and warn.

### الآية 74:3

> وَرَبَّكَ فَكَبِّرْ [74:3]

(3) And your Lord glorify.

### الآية 74:4

> وَثِيَابَكَ فَطَهِّرْ [74:4]

(4) And your clothing purify.

### الآية 74:5

> وَالرُّجْزَ فَاهْجُرْ [74:5]

(5) And uncleanliness\[1789\] avoid.
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1789\]- Specifically, idols or generally, bad conduct and morals.

### الآية 74:6

> وَلَا تَمْنُنْ تَسْتَكْثِرُ [74:6]

(6) And do not confer favor to acquire more\[1790\].
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1790\]- An alternative meaning is "Do not consider any favor you have conferred to be great."

### الآية 74:7

> وَلِرَبِّكَ فَاصْبِرْ [74:7]

(7) But for your Lord be patient.

### الآية 74:8

> فَإِذَا نُقِرَ فِي النَّاقُورِ [74:8]

(8) And when the trumpet is blown,

### الآية 74:9

> فَذَٰلِكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ يَوْمٌ عَسِيرٌ [74:9]

(9) That Day will be a difficult day

### الآية 74:10

> عَلَى الْكَافِرِينَ غَيْرُ يَسِيرٍ [74:10]

(10) For the disbelievers - not easy.

### الآية 74:11

> ذَرْنِي وَمَنْ خَلَقْتُ وَحِيدًا [74:11]

(11) Leave Me with the one I created alone\[1791\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1791\]- i.e., without wealth or children. The reference is to al-Waleed bin al-Mugheerah, who after inclining toward the Qur’ān, denied it publicly in order to win the approval of the Quraysh.

### الآية 74:12

> وَجَعَلْتُ لَهُ مَالًا مَمْدُودًا [74:12]

(12) And to whom I granted extensive wealth

### الآية 74:13

> وَبَنِينَ شُهُودًا [74:13]

(13) And children present \[with him\]

### الآية 74:14

> وَمَهَّدْتُ لَهُ تَمْهِيدًا [74:14]

(14) And spread \[everything\] before him, easing \[his life\].

### الآية 74:15

> ثُمَّ يَطْمَعُ أَنْ أَزِيدَ [74:15]

(15) Then he desires that I should add more.

### الآية 74:16

> كَلَّا ۖ إِنَّهُ كَانَ لِآيَاتِنَا عَنِيدًا [74:16]

(16) No! Indeed, he has been toward Our verses obstinate.

### الآية 74:17

> سَأُرْهِقُهُ صَعُودًا [74:17]

(17) I will cover him with arduous torment.

### الآية 74:18

> إِنَّهُ فَكَّرَ وَقَدَّرَ [74:18]

(18) Indeed, he thought and deliberated.\[1792\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1792\]- About what he would say concerning the Qur’ān and how he might discredit the Prophet (ﷺ).

### الآية 74:19

> فَقُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ [74:19]

(19) So may he be destroyed \[for\] how he deliberated.

### الآية 74:20

> ثُمَّ قُتِلَ كَيْفَ قَدَّرَ [74:20]

(20) Then may he be destroyed \[for\] how he deliberated.

### الآية 74:21

> ثُمَّ نَظَرَ [74:21]

(21) Then he considered \[again\];

### الآية 74:22

> ثُمَّ عَبَسَ وَبَسَرَ [74:22]

(22) Then he frowned and scowled;

### الآية 74:23

> ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ وَاسْتَكْبَرَ [74:23]

(23) Then he turned back and was arrogant

### الآية 74:24

> فَقَالَ إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا سِحْرٌ يُؤْثَرُ [74:24]

(24) And said, "This is not but magic imitated \[from others\].

### الآية 74:25

> إِنْ هَٰذَا إِلَّا قَوْلُ الْبَشَرِ [74:25]

(25) This is not but the word of a human being."

### الآية 74:26

> سَأُصْلِيهِ سَقَرَ [74:26]

(26) I will drive him into Saqar.\[1793\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1793\]- One of the proper names of Hell.

### الآية 74:27

> وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا سَقَرُ [74:27]

(27) And what can make you know what is Saqar?

### الآية 74:28

> لَا تُبْقِي وَلَا تَذَرُ [74:28]

(28) It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing \[unburned\],

### الآية 74:29

> لَوَّاحَةٌ لِلْبَشَرِ [74:29]

(29) Altering \[i.e., blackening\] the skins.

### الآية 74:30

> عَلَيْهَا تِسْعَةَ عَشَرَ [74:30]

(30) Over it are nineteen \[angels\].

### الآية 74:31

> وَمَا جَعَلْنَا أَصْحَابَ النَّارِ إِلَّا مَلَائِكَةً ۙ وَمَا جَعَلْنَا عِدَّتَهُمْ إِلَّا فِتْنَةً لِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا لِيَسْتَيْقِنَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ وَيَزْدَادَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِيمَانًا ۙ وَلَا يَرْتَابَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۙ وَلِيَقُولَ الَّذِينَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ مَرَضٌ وَالْكَافِرُونَ مَاذَا أَرَادَ اللَّهُ بِهَٰذَا مَثَلًا ۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يُضِلُّ اللَّهُ مَنْ يَشَاءُ وَيَهْدِي مَنْ يَشَاءُ ۚ وَمَا يَعْلَمُ جُنُودَ رَبِّكَ إِلَّا هُوَ ۚ وَمَا هِيَ إِلَّا ذِكْرَىٰ لِلْبَشَرِ [74:31]

(31) And We have not made the keepers of the Fire except angels. And We have not made their number except as a trial for those who disbelieve - that those who were given the Scripture will be convinced and those who have believed will increase in faith and those who were given the Scripture and the believers will not doubt and that those in whose hearts is disease \[i.e., hypocrisy\] and the disbelievers will say, "What does Allāh intend by this as an example?" Thus does Allāh send astray whom He wills and guide whom He wills. And none knows the soldiers of your Lord except Him. And it \[i.e., mention of the Fire\] is not but a reminder to humanity.

### الآية 74:32

> كَلَّا وَالْقَمَرِ [74:32]

(32) No! By the moon.

### الآية 74:33

> وَاللَّيْلِ إِذْ أَدْبَرَ [74:33]

(33) And \[by\] the night when it departs.

### الآية 74:34

> وَالصُّبْحِ إِذَا أَسْفَرَ [74:34]

(34) And \[by\] the morning when it brightens,

### الآية 74:35

> إِنَّهَا لَإِحْدَى الْكُبَرِ [74:35]

(35) Indeed, it \[i.e., the Fire\] is of the greatest \[afflictions\].

### الآية 74:36

> نَذِيرًا لِلْبَشَرِ [74:36]

(36) As a warning to humanity -

### الآية 74:37

> لِمَنْ شَاءَ مِنْكُمْ أَنْ يَتَقَدَّمَ أَوْ يَتَأَخَّرَ [74:37]

(37) To whoever wills among you to proceed\[1794\] or stay behind.
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1794\]- To righteousness by acceptance of the warning.

### الآية 74:38

> كُلُّ نَفْسٍ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ رَهِينَةٌ [74:38]

(38) Every soul, for what it has earned, will be retained\[1795\].
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1795\]- i.e., subject or held responsible.

### الآية 74:39

> إِلَّا أَصْحَابَ الْيَمِينِ [74:39]

(39) Except the companions of the right,\[1796\].
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1796\]- i.e., the righteous who receive their records in their right hands.

### الآية 74:40

> فِي جَنَّاتٍ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ [74:40]

(40) \[Who will be\] in gardens, questioning each other

### الآية 74:41

> عَنِ الْمُجْرِمِينَ [74:41]

(41) About the criminals,

### الآية 74:42

> مَا سَلَكَكُمْ فِي سَقَرَ [74:42]

(42) \[And asking them\], "What put you into Saqar?"

### الآية 74:43

> قَالُوا لَمْ نَكُ مِنَ الْمُصَلِّينَ [74:43]

(43) They will say, "We were not of those who prayed,

### الآية 74:44

> وَلَمْ نَكُ نُطْعِمُ الْمِسْكِينَ [74:44]

(44) Nor did we used to feed the poor.

### الآية 74:45

> وَكُنَّا نَخُوضُ مَعَ الْخَائِضِينَ [74:45]

(45) And we used to enter into vain discourse with those who engaged \[in it\],

### الآية 74:46

> وَكُنَّا نُكَذِّبُ بِيَوْمِ الدِّينِ [74:46]

(46) And we used to deny the Day of Recompense

### الآية 74:47

> حَتَّىٰ أَتَانَا الْيَقِينُ [74:47]

(47) Until there came to us the certainty \[i.e., death\]."

### الآية 74:48

> فَمَا تَنْفَعُهُمْ شَفَاعَةُ الشَّافِعِينَ [74:48]

(48) So there will not benefit them the intercession of \[any\] intercessors.

### الآية 74:49

> فَمَا لَهُمْ عَنِ التَّذْكِرَةِ مُعْرِضِينَ [74:49]

(49) Then what is \[the matter\] with them that they are, from the reminder, turning away.

### الآية 74:50

> كَأَنَّهُمْ حُمُرٌ مُسْتَنْفِرَةٌ [74:50]

(50) As if they were alarmed donkeys.

### الآية 74:51

> فَرَّتْ مِنْ قَسْوَرَةٍ [74:51]

(51) Fleeing from a lion?

### الآية 74:52

> بَلْ يُرِيدُ كُلُّ امْرِئٍ مِنْهُمْ أَنْ يُؤْتَىٰ صُحُفًا مُنَشَّرَةً [74:52]

(52) Rather, every person among them desires that he\[1797\] would be given scriptures spread about.\[1798\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1797\]- Instead of Muḥammad (ﷺ).
\[1798\]- i.e., made public. Much of their refusal of his message was due to envy and jealousy of the Prophet (ﷺ).

### الآية 74:53

> كَلَّا ۖ بَلْ لَا يَخَافُونَ الْآخِرَةَ [74:53]

(53) No! But they do not fear the Hereafter.

### الآية 74:54

> كَلَّا إِنَّهُ تَذْكِرَةٌ [74:54]

(54) No! Indeed, it \[i.e., the Qur’ān\] is a reminder.

### الآية 74:55

> فَمَنْ شَاءَ ذَكَرَهُ [74:55]

(55) Then whoever wills will remember it.

### الآية 74:56

> وَمَا يَذْكُرُونَ إِلَّا أَنْ يَشَاءَ اللَّهُ ۚ هُوَ أَهْلُ التَّقْوَىٰ وَأَهْلُ الْمَغْفِرَةِ [74:56]

(56) And they will not remember except that Allāh wills. He is worthy of fear and adequate for \[granting\] forgiveness.
