### الآية 78:1

> عَمَّ يَتَسَاءَلُونَ [78:1]

(1) About what are they asking one another?

### الآية 78:2

> عَنِ النَّبَإِ الْعَظِيمِ [78:2]

(2) About the great news\[1821\] -
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1821\]- i.e., the Resurrection.

### الآية 78:3

> الَّذِي هُمْ فِيهِ مُخْتَلِفُونَ [78:3]

(3) That over which they are in disagreement.

### الآية 78:4

> كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ [78:4]

(4) No! They are going to know.

### الآية 78:5

> ثُمَّ كَلَّا سَيَعْلَمُونَ [78:5]

(5) Then, no! They are going to know.

### الآية 78:6

> أَلَمْ نَجْعَلِ الْأَرْضَ مِهَادًا [78:6]

(6) Have We not made the earth a resting place?

### الآية 78:7

> وَالْجِبَالَ أَوْتَادًا [78:7]

(7) And the mountains as stakes?\[1822\] 
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1822\]- To stabilize the land and balance the earth.

### الآية 78:8

> وَخَلَقْنَاكُمْ أَزْوَاجًا [78:8]

(8) And We created you in pairs.

### الآية 78:9

> وَجَعَلْنَا نَوْمَكُمْ سُبَاتًا [78:9]

(9) And made your sleep \[a means for\] rest

### الآية 78:10

> وَجَعَلْنَا اللَّيْلَ لِبَاسًا [78:10]

(10) And made the night as clothing\[1823\].
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1823\]- Covering you in darkness and providing rest.

### الآية 78:11

> وَجَعَلْنَا النَّهَارَ مَعَاشًا [78:11]

(11) And made the day for livelihood.

### الآية 78:12

> وَبَنَيْنَا فَوْقَكُمْ سَبْعًا شِدَادًا [78:12]

(12) And constructed above you seven strong \[heavens\].

### الآية 78:13

> وَجَعَلْنَا سِرَاجًا وَهَّاجًا [78:13]

(13) And made \[therein\] a burning lamp

### الآية 78:14

> وَأَنْزَلْنَا مِنَ الْمُعْصِرَاتِ مَاءً ثَجَّاجًا [78:14]

(14) And sent down, from the rain clouds, pouring water.

### الآية 78:15

> لِنُخْرِجَ بِهِ حَبًّا وَنَبَاتًا [78:15]

(15) That We may bring forth thereby grain and vegetation.

### الآية 78:16

> وَجَنَّاتٍ أَلْفَافًا [78:16]

(16) And gardens of entwined growth.

### الآية 78:17

> إِنَّ يَوْمَ الْفَصْلِ كَانَ مِيقَاتًا [78:17]

(17) Indeed, the Day of Judgement is an appointed time -

### الآية 78:18

> يَوْمَ يُنْفَخُ فِي الصُّورِ فَتَأْتُونَ أَفْوَاجًا [78:18]

(18) The Day the Horn is blown and you will come forth in multitudes

### الآية 78:19

> وَفُتِحَتِ السَّمَاءُ فَكَانَتْ أَبْوَابًا [78:19]

(19) And the heaven is opened and will become gateways.

### الآية 78:20

> وَسُيِّرَتِ الْجِبَالُ فَكَانَتْ سَرَابًا [78:20]

(20) And the mountains are removed and will be \[but\] a mirage.

### الآية 78:21

> إِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ كَانَتْ مِرْصَادًا [78:21]

(21) Indeed, Hell has been lying in wait

### الآية 78:22

> لِلطَّاغِينَ مَآبًا [78:22]

(22) For the transgressors, a place of return,

### الآية 78:23

> لَابِثِينَ فِيهَا أَحْقَابًا [78:23]

(23) In which they will remain for ages \[unending\].

### الآية 78:24

> لَا يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا بَرْدًا وَلَا شَرَابًا [78:24]

(24) They will not taste therein \[any\] coolness or drink.

### الآية 78:25

> إِلَّا حَمِيمًا وَغَسَّاقًا [78:25]

(25) Except scalding water and \[foul\] purulence -

### الآية 78:26

> جَزَاءً وِفَاقًا [78:26]

(26) An appropriate recompense.\[1824\] 
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1824\]- In proportion to and comparable with their crimes.

### الآية 78:27

> إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا لَا يَرْجُونَ حِسَابًا [78:27]

(27) Indeed, they were not expecting an account

### الآية 78:28

> وَكَذَّبُوا بِآيَاتِنَا كِذَّابًا [78:28]

(28) And denied Our verses with \[emphatic\] denial.

### الآية 78:29

> وَكُلَّ شَيْءٍ أَحْصَيْنَاهُ كِتَابًا [78:29]

(29) But all things We have enumerated in writing.

### الآية 78:30

> فَذُوقُوا فَلَنْ نَزِيدَكُمْ إِلَّا عَذَابًا [78:30]

(30) "So taste \[the penalty\], and never will We increase you except in torment."\[1825\] 
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1825\]- This announcement will be made to the companions of Hell.

### الآية 78:31

> إِنَّ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ مَفَازًا [78:31]

(31) Indeed, for the righteous is attainment\[1826\] -
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1826\]- Of security, success and reward, including escape and safety from Hell.

### الآية 78:32

> حَدَائِقَ وَأَعْنَابًا [78:32]

(32) Gardens and grapevines.

### الآية 78:33

> وَكَوَاعِبَ أَتْرَابًا [78:33]

(33) And full-breasted \[companions\] of equal age.

### الآية 78:34

> وَكَأْسًا دِهَاقًا [78:34]

(34) And a full cup.\[1827\] 
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1827\]- Of wine which is delicious and does not intoxicate.

### الآية 78:35

> لَا يَسْمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغْوًا وَلَا كِذَّابًا [78:35]

(35) No ill speech will they hear therein or any falsehood -

### الآية 78:36

> جَزَاءً مِنْ رَبِّكَ عَطَاءً حِسَابًا [78:36]

(36) \[As\] reward from your Lord, \[a generous\] gift \[made due by\] account,\[1828\] 
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1828\]- i.e., as a result of both their own righteous deeds and the limitless generosity of Allāh (subḥānahu wa taʿālā). Another meaning is "a gift calculated \[to be adequate\]."

### الآية 78:37

> رَبِّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا الرَّحْمَٰنِ ۖ لَا يَمْلِكُونَ مِنْهُ خِطَابًا [78:37]

(37) \[From\] the Lord of the heavens and the earth and whatever is between them, the Most Merciful. They possess not from Him \[authority for\] speech.\[1829\] 
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1829\]- None of Allāh's creatures can plead with Him on the Day of Judgement except by His permission.

### الآية 78:38

> يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الرُّوحُ وَالْمَلَائِكَةُ صَفًّا ۖ لَا يَتَكَلَّمُونَ إِلَّا مَنْ أَذِنَ لَهُ الرَّحْمَٰنُ وَقَالَ صَوَابًا [78:38]

(38) The Day that the Spirit \[i.e., Gabriel\] and the angels will stand in rows, they will not speak except for one whom the Most Merciful permits, and he will say what is correct.

### الآية 78:39

> ذَٰلِكَ الْيَوْمُ الْحَقُّ ۖ فَمَنْ شَاءَ اتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِ مَآبًا [78:39]

(39) That is the True \[i.e., certain\] Day; so he who wills may take to his Lord a \[way of\] return.\[1830\] 
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1830\]- i.e., a direct route through correct beliefs and righteous deeds.

### الآية 78:40

> إِنَّا أَنْذَرْنَاكُمْ عَذَابًا قَرِيبًا يَوْمَ يَنْظُرُ الْمَرْءُ مَا قَدَّمَتْ يَدَاهُ وَيَقُولُ الْكَافِرُ يَا لَيْتَنِي كُنْتُ تُرَابًا [78:40]

(40) Indeed, We have warned you of an impending punishment on the Day when a man will observe what his hands have put forth\[1831\] and the disbeliever will say, "Oh, I wish that I were dust!" 
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1831\]- i.e., the deeds he did in this world, which await him in the Hereafter.
