### الآية 79:1

> وَالنَّازِعَاتِ غَرْقًا [79:1]

(1) By those \[angels\] who extract with violence\[1833\] 
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1833\]- i.e., those who tear out the souls of those destined for Hell.

### الآية 79:2

> وَالنَّاشِطَاتِ نَشْطًا [79:2]

(2) And \[by\] those who remove with ease\[1834\] 
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1834\]- i.e., those angels who ease out the souls of those destined for Paradise.

### الآية 79:3

> وَالسَّابِحَاتِ سَبْحًا [79:3]

(3) And \[by\] those who glide \[as if\] swimming\[1835\] 
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1835\]- Speeding to execute Allāh's commands.

### الآية 79:4

> فَالسَّابِقَاتِ سَبْقًا [79:4]

(4) And those who race each other in a race\[1836\] 
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1836\]- Racing to deliver the souls of the believers to Paradise.

### الآية 79:5

> فَالْمُدَبِّرَاتِ أَمْرًا [79:5]

(5) And those who arrange \[each\] matter,\[1837\]
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1837\]- According to Allāh's decree.

### الآية 79:6

> يَوْمَ تَرْجُفُ الرَّاجِفَةُ [79:6]

(6) On the Day the blast \[of the Horn\] will convulse \[creation\],

### الآية 79:7

> تَتْبَعُهَا الرَّادِفَةُ [79:7]

(7) There will follow it the subsequent \[one\].

### الآية 79:8

> قُلُوبٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَاجِفَةٌ [79:8]

(8) Hearts,\[1838\] that Day, will tremble, 
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1838\]- Those of the disbelievers who denied the Resurrection.

### الآية 79:9

> أَبْصَارُهَا خَاشِعَةٌ [79:9]

(9) Their eyes\[1839\] humbled. 
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1839\]- Those of the disbelievers.

### الآية 79:10

> يَقُولُونَ أَإِنَّا لَمَرْدُودُونَ فِي الْحَافِرَةِ [79:10]

(10) They are \[presently\] saying, "Will we indeed be returned to \[our\] former state \[of life\]?

### الآية 79:11

> أَإِذَا كُنَّا عِظَامًا نَخِرَةً [79:11]

(11) Even if we should be decayed bones?"\[1840\] 
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1840\]- The disbelievers say this in ridicule of the warning.

### الآية 79:12

> قَالُوا تِلْكَ إِذًا كَرَّةٌ خَاسِرَةٌ [79:12]

(12) They say, "That, then, would be a losing return."\[1841\] 
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1841\]- i.e., "If that were so, we would not be able to escape punishment."

### الآية 79:13

> فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ زَجْرَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ [79:13]

(13) Indeed, it will be but one shout,

### الآية 79:14

> فَإِذَا هُمْ بِالسَّاهِرَةِ [79:14]

(14) And suddenly they will be \[alert\] upon the earth's surface.

### الآية 79:15

> هَلْ أَتَاكَ حَدِيثُ مُوسَىٰ [79:15]

(15) Has there reached you the story of Moses? -

### الآية 79:16

> إِذْ نَادَاهُ رَبُّهُ بِالْوَادِ الْمُقَدَّسِ طُوًى [79:16]

(16) When his Lord called to him in the sacred valley of Ṭuwā,

### الآية 79:17

> اذْهَبْ إِلَىٰ فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّهُ طَغَىٰ [79:17]

(17) "Go to Pharaoh. Indeed, he has transgressed.

### الآية 79:18

> فَقُلْ هَلْ لَكَ إِلَىٰ أَنْ تَزَكَّىٰ [79:18]

(18) And say to him, 'Would you \[be willing to\] purify yourself

### الآية 79:19

> وَأَهْدِيَكَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَتَخْشَىٰ [79:19]

(19) And let me guide you to your Lord so you would fear \[Him\]?'"

### الآية 79:20

> فَأَرَاهُ الْآيَةَ الْكُبْرَىٰ [79:20]

(20) And he showed him the greatest sign,\[1842\] 
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1842\]- i.e., the miracle of his staff becoming a great snake.

### الآية 79:21

> فَكَذَّبَ وَعَصَىٰ [79:21]

(21) But he \[i.e., Pharaoh\] denied and disobeyed.

### الآية 79:22

> ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ يَسْعَىٰ [79:22]

(22) Then he turned his back, striving \[i.e., plotting\].\[1843\] 
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1843\]- An alternative meaning is "running \[from the snake\]."

### الآية 79:23

> فَحَشَرَ فَنَادَىٰ [79:23]

(23) And he gathered \[his people\] and called out.

### الآية 79:24

> فَقَالَ أَنَا رَبُّكُمُ الْأَعْلَىٰ [79:24]

(24) And said, "I am your most exalted lord."

### الآية 79:25

> فَأَخَذَهُ اللَّهُ نَكَالَ الْآخِرَةِ وَالْأُولَىٰ [79:25]

(25) So Allāh seized him in exemplary punishment for the last and the first \[transgression\].\[1844\].
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1844\]- i.e., for Pharaoh's setting himself up as a deity and for his previous oppression of the people and denial of Moses.

### الآية 79:26

> إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَعِبْرَةً لِمَنْ يَخْشَىٰ [79:26]

(26) Indeed in that is a lesson \[i.e., warning\] for whoever would fear \[Allāh\].

### الآية 79:27

> أَأَنْتُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقًا أَمِ السَّمَاءُ ۚ بَنَاهَا [79:27]

(27) Are you a more difficult creation or is the heaven? He \[i.e., Allāh\] constructed it.

### الآية 79:28

> رَفَعَ سَمْكَهَا فَسَوَّاهَا [79:28]

(28) He raised its ceiling and proportioned it.

### الآية 79:29

> وَأَغْطَشَ لَيْلَهَا وَأَخْرَجَ ضُحَاهَا [79:29]

(29) And He darkened its night and extracted its brightness.\[1845\] 
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1845\]- i.e., created the day from within the surrounding darkness.

### الآية 79:30

> وَالْأَرْضَ بَعْدَ ذَٰلِكَ دَحَاهَا [79:30]

(30) And after that He spread the earth.

### الآية 79:31

> أَخْرَجَ مِنْهَا مَاءَهَا وَمَرْعَاهَا [79:31]

(31) He extracted from it its water and its pasture,

### الآية 79:32

> وَالْجِبَالَ أَرْسَاهَا [79:32]

(32) And the mountains He set firmly

### الآية 79:33

> مَتَاعًا لَكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَامِكُمْ [79:33]

(33) As enjoyment \[i.e., provision\] for you and your grazing livestock.

### الآية 79:34

> فَإِذَا جَاءَتِ الطَّامَّةُ الْكُبْرَىٰ [79:34]

(34) But when there comes the greatest Overwhelming Calamity\[1846\] -
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1846\]- i.e., the Day of Resurrection.

### الآية 79:35

> يَوْمَ يَتَذَكَّرُ الْإِنْسَانُ مَا سَعَىٰ [79:35]

(35) The Day when man will remember that for which he strove,

### الآية 79:36

> وَبُرِّزَتِ الْجَحِيمُ لِمَنْ يَرَىٰ [79:36]

(36) And Hellfire will be exposed for \[all\] those who see -

### الآية 79:37

> فَأَمَّا مَنْ طَغَىٰ [79:37]

(37) So as for he who transgressed

### الآية 79:38

> وَآثَرَ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا [79:38]

(38) And preferred the life of the world,

### الآية 79:39

> فَإِنَّ الْجَحِيمَ هِيَ الْمَأْوَىٰ [79:39]

(39) Then indeed, Hellfire will be \[his\] refuge.

### الآية 79:40

> وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِ وَنَهَى النَّفْسَ عَنِ الْهَوَىٰ [79:40]

(40) But as for he who feared the position of his Lord\[1847\] and prevented the soul from \[unlawful\] inclination, 
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_

### الآية 79:41

> فَإِنَّ الْجَنَّةَ هِيَ الْمَأْوَىٰ [79:41]

(41) Then indeed, Paradise will be \[his\] refuge.

### الآية 79:42

> يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ السَّاعَةِ أَيَّانَ مُرْسَاهَا [79:42]

(42) They ask you, \[O Muḥammad\], about the Hour: when is its arrival?\[1848\] 
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1848\]- Literally, "resting" or "establishment."

### الآية 79:43

> فِيمَ أَنْتَ مِنْ ذِكْرَاهَا [79:43]

(43) In what \[position\] are you that you should mention it?\[1849\] 
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1849\]- Meaning that Muḥammad (ﷺ) had no knowledge of it, so how could he inform them?

### الآية 79:44

> إِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ مُنْتَهَاهَا [79:44]

(44) To your Lord is its finality.\[1850\] 
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1850\]- i.e., its destination and termination. And to Him belongs ultimate knowledge of it.

### الآية 79:45

> إِنَّمَا أَنْتَ مُنْذِرُ مَنْ يَخْشَاهَا [79:45]

(45) You are only a warner for those who fear it.

### الآية 79:46

> كَأَنَّهُمْ يَوْمَ يَرَوْنَهَا لَمْ يَلْبَثُوا إِلَّا عَشِيَّةً أَوْ ضُحَاهَا [79:46]

(46) It will be, on the Day they see it,\[1851\] as though they had not remained \[in the world\] except for an afternoon or a morning thereof.
\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_\_
\[1851\]- i.e., the Hour, the Resurrection.
