### الآية 90:1

> لَا أُقْسِمُ بِهَٰذَا الْبَلَدِ [90:1]

Al-Balad 
---------

---

لَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِهَٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ


(90:1) Nay!1 I swear by this city2

---

### الآية 90:2

> وَأَنْتَ حِلٌّ بِهَٰذَا الْبَلَدِ [90:2]

وَأَنتَ حِلُّۢ بِهَٰذَا ٱلۡبَلَدِ


(90:2) – this city wherein you have been rendered violable–3

### الآية 90:3

> وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدَ [90:3]

وَوَالِدٖ وَمَا وَلَدَ


(90:3) and I swear by the parent and his offspring:4

### الآية 90:4

> لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنْسَانَ فِي كَبَدٍ [90:4]

لَقَدۡ خَلَقۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ فِي كَبَدٍ


(90:4) Verily We have created man into toil and hardship.5

### الآية 90:5

> أَيَحْسَبُ أَنْ لَنْ يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ [90:5]

أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّن يَقۡدِرَ عَلَيۡهِ أَحَدٞ


(90:5) Does he think that no one can overpower him?6

### الآية 90:6

> يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُبَدًا [90:6]

يَقُولُ أَهۡلَكۡتُ مَالٗا لُّبَدًا


(90:6) He says: “I have squandered enormous wealth.”7

### الآية 90:7

> أَيَحْسَبُ أَنْ لَمْ يَرَهُ أَحَدٌ [90:7]

أَيَحۡسَبُ أَن لَّمۡ يَرَهُۥٓ أَحَدٌ


(90:7) Does he believe that none has seen him?8

### الآية 90:8

> أَلَمْ نَجْعَلْ لَهُ عَيْنَيْنِ [90:8]

أَلَمۡ نَجۡعَل لَّهُۥ عَيۡنَيۡنِ


(90:8) Did We not grant him two eyes,

### الآية 90:9

> وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ [90:9]

وَلِسَانٗا وَشَفَتَيۡنِ


(90:9) and a tongue and two lips?9

### الآية 90:10

> وَهَدَيْنَاهُ النَّجْدَيْنِ [90:10]

وَهَدَيۡنَٰهُ ٱلنَّجۡدَيۡنِ


(90:10) And did We not show him the two highroads (of good and evil)?0

### الآية 90:11

> فَلَا اقْتَحَمَ الْعَقَبَةَ [90:11]

فَلَا ٱقۡتَحَمَ ٱلۡعَقَبَةَ


(90:11) But he did not venture to scale the difficult steep.1

### الآية 90:12

> وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْعَقَبَةُ [90:12]

وَمَآ أَدۡرَىٰكَ مَا ٱلۡعَقَبَةُ


(90:12) And what do you know what that difficult steep is?

### الآية 90:13

> فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ [90:13]

فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ


(90:13) It is freeing someone's neck from slavery; 

---

### الآية 90:14

> أَوْ إِطْعَامٌ فِي يَوْمٍ ذِي مَسْغَبَةٍ [90:14]

أَوۡ إِطۡعَٰمٞ فِي يَوۡمٖ ذِي مَسۡغَبَةٖ


(90:14) or giving food on a day of hunger

### الآية 90:15

> يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ [90:15]

يَتِيمٗا ذَا مَقۡرَبَةٍ


(90:15) to an orphan near of kin;

### الآية 90:16

> أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ [90:16]

أَوۡ مِسۡكِينٗا ذَا مَتۡرَبَةٖ


(90:16) or to a destitute lying in dust;2

### الآية 90:17

> ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْمَرْحَمَةِ [90:17]

ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلصَّبۡرِ وَتَوَاصَوۡاْ بِٱلۡمَرۡحَمَةِ


(90:17) and, then besides this, he be one of those who believed,3 
 and enjoined upon one another steadfastness and enjoined upon one another compassion.4

### الآية 90:18

> أُولَٰئِكَ أَصْحَابُ الْمَيْمَنَةِ [90:18]

أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ


(90:18) These are the People of the Right Hand.

### الآية 90:19

> وَالَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِآيَاتِنَا هُمْ أَصْحَابُ الْمَشْأَمَةِ [90:19]

وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا هُمۡ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ


(90:19) As for those who rejected Our Signs, they are the People of the Left 
 Hand.5

### الآية 90:20

> عَلَيْهِمْ نَارٌ مُؤْصَدَةٌ [90:20]

عَلَيۡهِمۡ نَارٞ مُّؤۡصَدَةُۢ


(90:20) Upon them shall be a Fire that will hem them in.6
