(22) And you were not covering [i.e., protecting] yourselves,[1389] lest your hearing testify against you or your sight or your skins, but you assumed that Allāh does not know much of what you do.

 22. And you have not been hiding yourselves (in the world), lest your ears, and your eyes, and your skins should testify against you; but you thought that Allâh knew not much of what you were doing.

And in no way did you take to screening yourselves that neither your hearing, nor your beholdings, (i.e., eyesight (s) nor your skins should testify against you; but you surmised that Allah does not know much of whatever you did.

Rather, you thought that Allah (may He be glorified) was not aware of many things you did and that it remained hidden from Him, so you were deceived.
