(72) And [recall] when you slew a man and disputed[30] over it, but Allāh was to bring out that which you were concealing.

72. And (remember) when you killed a man and fell into dispute among yourselves as to the crime. But Allâh brought forth that which you were hiding.

وَإِذۡ قَتَلۡتُمۡ نَفۡسٗا فَٱدَّـٰرَٰٔتُمۡ فِيهَاۖ وَٱللَّهُ مُخۡرِجٞ مَّا كُنتُمۡ تَكۡتُمُونَ
And (remember) as you killed a self, (and) so you parried about it, and Allah is to bring out whatever you were keeping back.

وَإِذۡ قَتَلۡتُمۡ نَفۡسٗا فَٱدَّـٰرَٰٔتُمۡ فِيهَاۖ وَٱللَّهُ مُخۡرِجٞ مَّا كُنتُمۡ تَكۡتُمُونَ

وَإِذۡ قَتَلۡتُمۡ نَفۡسٗا فَٱدَّـٰرَٰٔتُمۡ فِيهَاۖ وَٱللَّهُ مُخۡرِجٞ مَّا كُنتُمۡ تَكۡتُمُونَ
Remember ye slew a man and fell into a dispute among yourselves as to the crime: But Allah was to bring forth what ye did hide.
Yusuf Ali - English translation
وَإِذۡ قَتَلۡتُمۡ نَفۡسٗا فَٱدَّـٰرَٰٔتُمۡ فِيهَاۖ وَٱللَّهُ مُخۡرِجٞ مَّا كُنتُمۡ تَكۡتُمُونَ

وَإِذۡ قَتَلۡتُمۡ نَفۡسٗا فَٱدَّـٰرَٰٔتُمۡ فِيهَاۖ وَٱللَّهُ مُخۡرِجٞ مَّا كُنتُمۡ تَكۡتُمُونَ
(2:72) And recall when you killed a man and then began to remonstrate and

وَإِذۡ قَتَلۡتُمۡ نَفۡسٗا فَٱدَّـٰرَٰٔتُمۡ فِيهَاۖ وَٱللَّهُ مُخۡرِجٞ مَّا كُنتُمۡ تَكۡتُمُونَ
Then, when you [Israelites] killed someone and started to blame one another- although God was to bring what you had concealed to light-

And when you killed a man, and started putting the blame for it on one another, while Allah was to bring forth what you were holding back.

72. Allah reminds the Israelites about when they killed one of their own. They accused each other of it, each rejecting the accusation of having killed him, and accusing someone else, until they fought. But Allah revealed what they were hiding about the murder of the innocent person.
